Clitheroe 2’s 12 Fylde Vandals 43
The EPC collective had done a great job assembling a squad of 22 for the trip out east to Clitheroe. There was a mix of old faces and new faces, youth and experience and with the sun shining all the signs were there for a good afternoon of rugby.
Propping were two of the ‘We Three Kings’, Damian and Rob. The third member of the triumvirate, Jack, was at open side flanker. Chris Cardwell was at hooker and skipper Ali Atkinson was in the row alongside Richard Todd. Dave Porter was at 8 and there was a welcome return to action for Richard Mason on the blindside of the scrum.
Liam Sheedy donned the number 9 shirt and Phil Swindells was at 10. Tony Rawlinson was on the left flank and Sam Smith the right. Stephan Kuhn and Adam Todd patrolled the midfield and Stuart Satchell was the last line of defence.
The finishers were Nathan Clegg, Toby Fulford-Brown, Max Barrett, Jon Whitby, Jack Worsley, Hakan Ilhan and new boy Rafael Laverde.
The Vandals played a decent style from the start using the forwards to good effect. They were winning good ball from the lineout and the scrum was solid. There was pace across the backs and the ball went wide as often as it could. Sam Smith was an eager wide receiver and made good metres with ball in hand. In fact he stole the show really with a hat trick of tries using pace and power in equal measures. The other tries were from Richard Todd, Jack King, Stuart Satchell and Phil Swindells who was also unusually successful with 4 conversions.
Clitheroe got over the line twice and made one conversion but the Vandals controlled the game from the start and were never in danger throwing it away. There still too many penalties given away and this is something that we are going to have to address but it was an excellent squad performance and gets us back on track as we build for next week’s game which is a big one! Thanks to Clitheroe for the game, we wish you all the best for the rest of the season. A huge thanks goes to the entire 22 Vandals who made the trip to Clitheroe, each and every one of you contributed to this victory and finally as always thank you to our loyal support, it’s hugely appreciated.
