Aspull 2nds 43 Fylde Vandals 24
Fylde Vandals took a trip down the M61 to Aspull for this league and cup double header. They had happy memories of the last time they played a cup game at Aspull as it was here that they beat Garstang in the LBS Plate Final of the season before last. Unfortunately there is going to be no repeat of that feat this year!
The EPD had gathered a strong group of players for this one but was forced into a bit of a pre-game switch up, consequently Alex Grey moved out of the back row to take on the role of scrum half and Rob King made his first start at blind side. King the very younger had another good game and is following fast in the footsteps of his older brother in becoming an integral part of the pack. Alex Grey looked like he’d been playing at scrummy for years.
The game started well for the Vandals as the pack did what the Vandals pack is very good at and Richard Todd was driven over the line for the opening score. Aspull hit back quickly using their very quick outside backs to good effect and they took a lead which as it proved the Vandals were chasing for the rest of the game.
When the ball was up front, the Vandals big lads were generally in control but if the ball was turned over Aspull threw the ball wide and tries were scored. The Vandals worked hard in defence and made a number of try saving tackles but inevitably Aspull built up a bit of a lead.
The Vandals never give up and with Aspull conceding a number of penalties managed to get some good field position and from the ensuing lineouts and scrums piled the pressure on Aspull’s line. Alex Grey capped another fine performance off with a try and this was soon followed by Tom Godfrey who was bungled over in the corner.
Aspull bagged another try or two but the Vandals had brought the game to within their reach with one try the difference. They were working hard to get on equal terms but couldn’t ask Aspull enough questions in the red zone. Ali Atkinson grabbed a lateish try for the Vandals and Frazer Swindells had kicked a couple of conversions but the home side had enough in the bank to take the league points and also progress to the next round of the cup.
I don’t think the final score of 43 – 24 to Aspull was a true reflection on the game, it was definitely closer than that but I’d like to congratulate Aspull on their win and wish them all the best in the cup and we look forward to the return league fixture later in the season.
Thanks to the Vandals who to a man worked tirelessly for the whole 80 minutes and a big thanks to our speccies for their unwavering support, it is hugely appreciated. Next week we welcome ‘Hoppers 4ths to the Woodlands so let’s be havin’ you for that one!
