Fylde Saracens 54-15 Blackburn 2s: report by Rupert Cobain

Blackburn 2s were the visitors to the Woodlands for the Sarries first home game of the season. As the Sarries were the only team at home, they had the opportunity to utilise the main pitch. This was fantastic for their new signing Lionel Bender as he said he liked a bit of space to run in.

Fylde came straight out of the blocks with Tom Hodgkins collecting the kick off and running it back and making yards (He collected every single restart, I don’t think the 10 liked him that much!). A few phases later and Lionel scored his 1st try of the match in the corner. Reedy missed the conversion. Blackburn hit straight back from the restart and got themselves on the board 5-5.

Great work by the Sarries pack allowed Lionel to score his 2nd try by the sticks after great carries by Jaime “The Griffalo” Griffin and Luke Clitheroe. Reedy with the extras 12-5.

The Sarries knew they were going to be in a physical game and this showed by the 2nd try scored by Blackburn, when their 32 stone prop barrelled over in front of the sticks, knocking Matt Goupil into next week. 12-12.

Not to be deterred by this back and forth rugby, the Sarries hit back with two quick tries through…..you guessed it, Lionel. Reedy missed the extras. For the remaining 10 minutes of the half, Blackburn continued to bang on the door, but the strong, dogged defence by the Sarries on their own try line kept them at bay. This was shown by 4/10 Adam Hiles’s crunching tackle, splitting the Blackburn 7 in half as he went diving for the line. Blackburn only left the red zone with a penalty kick, and in doing so ended the half 22-15.

Reedy fired his troops up in the half time team talk and reaffirmed that the wind would be behind us and he wanted to play in the Blackburn half and that is what they most certainly did, with 32 unanswered points. It could have been more, if it wasn’t for the sniper in the stands shooting Tom Hodgkins in front of the sticks after he had just run half the pitch dancing through tackles.

Reedy started off the points with a simple penalty kick in front of the posts. Fylde started to dominate the battle up front through RIck Frith, Fat Will Atkinson and Mighty Max Moore and this allowed Gav Kelly to score in the corner for his 1st try in 5 years! Reedy missing the conversion.

Blackburn tried to get a foot hold back in the game and continued to press, but the Sarries, like a sponge soak up the pressure and forced Blackburn to make errors, which they did so when a wayward pass was pounced on and Lionel was released to run the length of the pitch and score in the corner. Reedy missed the conversion AGAIN.

Fylde’s dominance continued, with Adam Lanigan scoring quickly from the restarted. In doing so, there is a warrant out for Adam’s arrest for Assault with use of a Deadly Dummy. As Adam had scored underneath the sticks, Reedy was able to get the extras this time.

As the 2nd half wore on, the Sarries forwards showed their control and power with two lovely taken scores from catch and drives off the line-out, scored by The Griffalo and Luke Clitheroe respectively. Reedy missed both kicks. Final score 54-15.

MOM – Tom Hodgkins

We would like to thank Blackburn. They are a great bunch of lads and we always have a fantastic battle with them. We look to the return fixture later in the year. Unfortunately for the Sarries, this is the last we will see of Lionel Bender this year, as the hired gun disappears into the smoke.
