Spectators flocked to Fylde’s Woodlands Clubhouse to watch live coverage of the Rugby World Cup Final from Yokohama. It was a great occasion despite England’s defeat by an excellent South Africa squad.
Several hundred packed into the Sir Bill Beaumont Bar and the Malcolm Phillips Lounge to watch the drama unfold. Campbell & Rowley staff did a heroic job keeping everyone plied with drinks and bacon rolls!
BBC Radio Lancashire arrived at 07.15 and set up a live feed to their Blackburn base from which presenter Gary Hickson broadcast live throughout their breakfast and morning programmes. He captured the excitement and tension of the occasion by interviewing many of the audience, including former England international centre Malcolm Phillips.
Whilst from an English perspective the performance and result were disappointing, the huge numbers at the Woodlands – men, women and young people – indicated the great interest in rugby union. Fylde and every other English club have to capture this enthusiasm for our great game and attract this audience back to live club and representative rugby.
