We are delighted to announce that hooker Ben Gregory has re-signed for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Ben started playing rugby at Wigan RUFC, alongside now Fylde team mates Tom Carleton and Nick Ashcroft, from the age 10 until U’15s. He moved to Kirkham Grammar school to study for ‘A’ levels where he played at hooker for the 1st XV for two years, going unbeaten in both seasons. He earned representative honours for Lancashire at U’15s to U’18s levels. He made the U’16s and U’18s North of England squads and then played a full season for the Sale Sharks U’18s Academy. He was selected for England Counties’ U’20s tour to Georgia in 2018 and made his senior Lancashire County Championship debut in May 2019.
Ben, 22, joined Fylde in the 2015-16 season whilst still at KGS, made a number of appearances for the Hawks, then was named on the 1st XV replacements bench at Loughborough Students in April 2016. He came on in the 28th minute and scored his first try for the Club nine minutes later. This is a case of starting as you mean to continue!
He’s made a total of 91 1st team league appearances, sharing the hooker’s duties in the last two seasons mainly with Alex Loney. He’s been an ‘ever present’ in this period and is on an unbroken run of 68 consecutive appearances up to the premature end of the 2019-20 season. He’s a tough, mobile and speedy player who has looked at home at National League level from the beginnings.
Warren Spragg said: “Ben was outstanding last season and in my opinion was the best hooker in the league. He will have an important role to play this year as we look to kick on as a group and I am excited to see what he can achieve.”
Ben Gregory said: “Signing on for 2020-21 season was an easy decision for me as the Club is in a great place with loads of young talent within the 1st team and also a lot of lads with a lot of experience in the National League now. I think that we had a good year this year which was cut due to COVID-19 but we will come back in the new season and challenge again with the squad we have.”
