Player news for 2020-21 season – no 1 David Fairbrother
The ever popular backrow forward Dave Fairbrother has re-signed for the 2020-21 season, his 7th campaign with Fylde. Despite a number of injuries and occasional Navy obligations, ‘Fairy’ has made 107 1st XV National League appearances to date, scoring 30 tries in the process.
David Fairbrother grew up in Fleetwood and came through Fleetwood’s Mini-Junior and senior teams. He joined the Royal Marines, served two tours in Afghanistan and on his return quickly established a place in the Royal Navy 1st team. He has been a regular in the RN team and one of the most influential, playing regularly at Twickenham v the Army. He’s also represented the Combined Services and has been a regular in Lancashire’s senior squad which has also led to appearances at HQ. He went on tour with England Counties to Canada in 2016.
‘Fairy’ (32) joined Fylde for the 2014-15 season and has been first choice at no 8 since then. He is a very mobile, athletic and tough backrower with tremendous fitness and durability. Given the nature of his ‘up and at ’em’ style of play, it’s not especially surprising that he has suffered injuries which have restricted his appearances somewhat.
Warren Spragg said: “It was great to see Fairy back at his best last season after returning from injury and I was really happy for him when the lads voted him as their player of the year. He is an incredible character and an outstanding player who leads from the front every time he steps onto the field.”
David Fairbrother said: “I’m really happy to sign for another year with the best club in the North West! It’s a shame to be playing without our leader Adam Lewis but we will crack on without him. I’m looking forward to an exciting season and hopefully this is the year we get back into National One.”
