Fylde offers a huge welcome to half-back Matt Sturgess who has joined from Sale Sharks for the 2020-21 season. The former Hutton Grammar School, Tarleton RUFC, Preston Grasshoppers and Lancashire junior came through the Sharks Academy system via Myerscough College’s AASE programme. He established himself at scrum-half in the Sharks U’18s squad before earning a full time professional contract in 2017.
After a highly promising start and becoming a regular in the Sale Jets line-up, and replacement appearances in the Sharks European Challenge Cup, LV Cup and Premiership Rugby Cup tournaments, injuries frustrated his progress. This was not before Matt was dual registered with Sale FC and he made 26 appearances in their N2N (2017-18) and N1 (2018-19) campaigns, mainly at 9 but sometimes at 10. A torn ACL in pre-season training spoiled his 2019-20 season.
Warren Spragg said: “We’re really excited to be able to bring Matt in. He’s a great lad who’s had a difficult year with injury, but has been really professional with his recovery and is desperate to get his rugby development back on track. I am sure he will make a positive impact on and off the pitch and help us move forward as a squad.”
Matt said: “It’s not been the three years I hoped for so I think joining Fylde will be a good, fresh start for me next season. I initially met Spraggy at Myerscough and after speaking with him recently about the aspirations of the Club, it was a ‘no brainer’ for me to sign up. We share the same ambitions for the season which is promotion to National One. I can’t want to get to the club, get to know the boys and get started.”
