Fylde switches to digital match programmes

A great deal of work goes into the compilation of match programmes for the Club’s National League fixtures – as a service to supporters attending games and to sponsors and advertisers who help us publish these. These programmes have been in printed form going back to the 1930s in a very different media environment.

They are, perhaps, the most obvious manifestation of the Club’s history and they have charted its fate over this long period. As we gradually embraced sophisticated colour printing and high quality photographs, the attractiveness of the product (and its substance, now up to 40 pages) has been appreciated by our supporters and has attracted praise from many quarters including visitors from opposing clubs. A recent comment from an official from a visiting club was “I’ve found out more about my own club after reading this programme than I knew before!”

However, the cost of producing each programme has steadily increased and their sales have remained stubbornly low. In the spring of this year it was decided, after a great deal of thought, to move to a digital only version which would be distributed widely, freely, to the Club’s followers through its various channels – social media, website and emailed to our extensive database. This will enable us to reach thousands of people who follow the Club’s fortunes, some of whom attend games and others who don’t for various reasons.

We also have a responsibility to advertisers and sponsors who under-write the costs of production and who deserve much more exposure than the 150 or so printed copies currently produced.

The digital match programme will be distributed late on Wednesdays or early on Thursdays ahead of each 1st XV game. It will be accessible from any digital device – computer, tablet or most importantly via a smartphone. An archive of these will be maintained on the Club’s website and will constitute an important historic record.

We fully appreciate that not every supporter is comfortable with digital technology. Coverage of the Club’s affairs will continue in printed newspapers such as the Blackpool Gazette and Lytham St Annes Express. There will also be a printed team sheet distributed freely at each home game.

The Club needs to reach out to new audiences if we are to maintain and develop its future as an important part of our local community whilst also competing on the national stage.
