Hawks’ tough pre-season game v a strong Ampthill 1881.

The Fylde Hawks hosted Ampthill’s 1881 team in a pre-season friendly, prior to the 1st team playing National 1 team ‘Ampthill’, on Saturday 25th August 2018.

Pre-season games can have many benefits and after the game v Kirkby Lonsdale the Saturday prior (which was abandoned at half time due a serious injury to their hooker), the players were keen to get a full game under their belts and iron out any plays they have been working on in training. Ampthill 1881 had a very strong pack and were able to score just after 5 minutes. However, Head Coad Dan and Team Manager were more interested in how the team responded. 12 minutes into the game, Tom Burtonwood crossed the white line and Tom Forster converted. Ampthill responded and were able to score three tries of which two where converted, before the Hawks could offer a reply, with James Torkington scoring a try. Again, Tom Forster successfully converted. Ampthill still had control of the game and scored two further tries and one conversion before half time.

HT: Hawks 14 – Amphtill 38.

The start of the second half saw the Hawks make some changes, with players being rested for the later game. This allowed Ampthill to continue as strongly as they had finished the first half, scoring two further tries but not converting. 20 minutes into the half, after some great graft by the forwards and excellent distribution by the backs, set up Tom Hodgkins to score a try, wide out on the right wing. The conversion was missed. Ampthill then scored a try before the Hawks finished the game with Adam Lanigan scoring close to the posts. Henry Pearson successfully converted.

FT: Hawks 26 – Ampthill 53.

Overall, the score was a true reflection of the game and all credit must go to a very well drilled and strong Ampthill 1881 side. More importantly for the Hawks, it was an opportunity for players to have a run out prior to the season starting on Saturday 1st September away at Sale FC.

A special mention goes to all those people whom came to watch the Hawks rugby & Chris Farrow for the excellent action photos, two of which I think you will enjoy – THANK YOU.
