Performance of the week – Fylde Hawks at Macclesfield
A couple of injuries in the 1st team strained the Hawks resources and they looked forward to a tricky game at Priory Park with barely 15 players in a Premier League fixture. On the day, domestic problems for another player required skipper David Reed to drive to Blackpool with two others plus kit and balls to pick him up. The party of four arrived 15 minutes before kick off, with no more than a five minute warm-up possible for them. The physio undertook ‘waterboy duties’ as no other support was available.
A fine, brave performance by the 15 player squad earned a 22-43 victory. They scored six tries by Kyle Macaulay (2), Will Lockhart (2), Tom Steer and George Brookes. Skipper David Reed kicked one penalty and five conversions.
Manager Warren Atkinson said: “This tremendous effort cannot be underestimated and will, hopefully, be the beginning of a great run for us. We have nine games before Christmas, seven of these are at home. Our away games are at ‘Hoppers and Blackburn so there is very little in the way of travel for us.
“We can do well in this league if we play like we did on Saturday. We’d like more of our players to train regularly – think how good we could be if that was achieved!”
