Rochdale 3rds 26 Fylde Vandals 15
Rochdale RUFC was the Vandals destination on Saturday with their 3rd team waiting to lock horns with the boys from the Woodlands. After last week’s excellent win against Hawcoat Park the EPD was hopeful that his charges could double up and continue the progress made in that game.
As there were no spares, the starting and hopefully finishing front row was Damian King, Chris Cardwell and Richard Todd. Behind them were Ali Atkinson and Mikey Hewitson and the back row was Tom Godfrey, Dave Porter and the skipper Ben James. Phil Swindells was at 9 and Sean Whiteside was 10. Pete Acton and Jack King were in the centres and Cecil Holland and Nathan Bagshaw were out wide. Jack Jones patrolled the backfield. The bench was a sturdy one with Rob King, Adey Grey, Alex Grey, Adam Todd, Sam Smith and Sean Townsend all waiting patiently to get on.
The Vandals started well applying immediate pressure in the Rochdale red zone. A standard Vandals try ensued and Richard Todd was the scorer. Sean Whiteside added the extras and quickly followed it up with a penalty. 10-0 to the Vandals in as many minutes.
Unfortunately the Vandals began to slip too many tackles and give away too many silly penalties which inevitably led to Rochdale gaining the upper hand with a two or three tries. The hoped for progress from last Saturday was looking distinctly non-existent.
The second half was much better with spirit and downright dog massively evident but there were still too many tackles missed and the Vandals were always playing catch-up. Rob King grabbed a try but Rochdale took the second half 10-7 making the eventual final score 26-15 to the home side.
Onwards and upwards from this one, the attitude and effort was typically Vandalesque but the boys let themselves down at key times and this gave Rochdale ample chances to score and ultimately win the game. However, they knew they’d been in a game and I can only thank the whole Vandals squad for the effort they continue to put in. All the best to Rochdale for the rest of the season and we thank them for the game and after match hospitality. The Vandals MoM was chosen by themselves and the squad was unanimous in their choice of young Adam Todd. He made several try saving tackles and ran out of defence with pace and authority beyond his years.
It’s a cup weekend next week so no game for us but the following week sees us entertaining Blackburn 3rds so let’s get everyone down for that and hopefully it’ll be winning ways again.
