Clitheroe clinch the win v Vandals

Clitheroe 2nds 33 Fylde Vandals 29

This was a good game played between two pretty evenly matched teams. Both had decent packs of forwards and also some dangerous runners across the backs. Clitheroe pipped the Fylde boys for pace but rolling mauls were again used to good effect by the Vandals and three of their four tries in the first half came from the big boys up front. Jack King was the first to cross the line with a trademark line bust. Ben James and Rob King also scored but with a little more help from the rest of the pack.

Adam Todd added the fourth try as he beat his opposite number then stepped inside for the score. The only problem was that every time the Vandals scored Clitheroe were able to cancel it out with one of their own, generally from their exceptionally quick and steppy centre who went on to bag four tries on the day.

The Vandals played some good rugby but also let themselves down with a few handling errors and missed tackles which helped Clitheroe no end. The game continued the tit for tat scoring scenario but Clitheroe did manage to go two tries up in the last few minutes. The Vandals never lie down though and Alex Grey brought them within a score when he skipped past a couple of defenders to go in at the corner. Sean Whiteside had kicked one conversion already but slotted a tremendous one from Alex’s try out wide.

Unfortunately time was against the Vandals and Clitheroe held out for the win 33-29. Well done to them and we wish them all the best for their final couple of games of the season. Thanks to the Vandals for their continued Saturday exertions and also to the handful of support who made their way east to watch the game.

There’s a couple of weeks of for the Vandals now before the final act of the season, a home game against Burnley. Let’s make sure we sign off the 2018/19 season in style.
