Top junior rugby at the Woodlands tonight – Fylde U’16s v Stonyhurst College

Top junior rugby at the Woodlands, today, Thurs 23rd Jan., when the accomplished Fylde U’16s take on Stonyhurst College, 6-7pm. Under lights on main pitch, first time for a number of players. 10 of Fylde’s squad competed for Lancashire’s 16s Group v Yorkshire on Sunday. Please come & support these talented young players!

One of Fylde’s excellent former 1st XV players & Arnold teachers, Mark Evans (244 National League appearances) is Head of Physical Education at Stonyhurst College and coaches the College’s rugby teams. He’s kindly sent us this background on his U’16s squad. It should be a fine game!

Stonyhurst College U16s travel to Fylde RFC on Thursday evening, for what should be an entertaining and enjoyable encounter against the Fylde U16s squad.

The Stonyhurst boys have had a successful season so far and have won 8 out of their 11 matches to date. Good wins over AKS Lytham, Liverpool College, Bradford GS before their October half term, were then followed with a very pleasing end to the Christmas term with further victories over Ampleforth College, King’s School, Macclesfied and Liverpool College. Narrow loses were had against Lancaster RGS and Ripley St Thomas, but in the return fixture versus Ripley, they proved successful.

They have not played since the very end of November, and with a Lancashire Cup Quarter-Final next week, this match against the talented Fylde U16s will be a perfect preparation. The Stonyhurst squad does not have the array of Lancashire and Sale representatives that the Fylde squad can boast, but with rugby a huge part of the curriculum at the College, and with a boarding ethos and an extensive Games program, they will be well-drilled, skilful, committed and extremely fit. Many of their boys have played together as a team since they were in their junior school but their squad is also made up of boys who have only started playing the game last September.

Stonyhurst will play their usual fast flowing brand of ruby, with the ball in hand, and they are looking forward to the challenge under floodlights on Fylde’s main pitch on Thursday evening. It should be a very entertaining encounter.
