Here is Fylde Head Coach Warren Spragg’s final match programme notes of the 2018-19 season.
I would like to welcome today’s opponents Sedgley Park to the Woodlands for our final home game of an eventful season. Matt Bebbington and Jonny Roddam have done a great job over the last few seasons and managed to overcome an early season injury crisis to become the form side in the league as they season draws to a close. Last week’s results mean they have overtaken us in terms of league position and we must win today to give ourselves a chance to finish the season as the top ranked team in Lancashire; something we value extremely highly as a club.
We are disappointed with our recent form. Losing three consecutive games was always a possibility when looking at the fixture list, but I firmly believe we had the ability to win each of the games. We have looked at potential reasons why we have struggled and as ever the boys have been working hard to get better. It is important that we don’t let recent form be our overriding memory of this season; we have a seen a group of young players respond to last season’s experience of losing lots of matches by overcoming those challenges and dominating games for a large part of this season. I am extremely proud of the way they have stepped up and matured as a group and very excited about the future for this team.
It seems fitting that the final notes of the season should reference a lot of the good work that has happened around the first team squad and there are a number of people I would like to thank. Roger Banks has been a great support and link between myself and Dave Young and I have appreciated both of their backing on and off the field. David Wiseman, Nik Smith, Pete Conway and Ian Cosh have made sure the the squad have been supported really well on match days and at training. Our medical staff have been outstanding and Allan Foster has been as consistent as ever looking after the club’s media channels. Thank you to all of you for the effort you put in week in and week out to make this club a great place.
Alex Loney and Dan Orwin have been awesome coaches and fantastic people to work alongside and Adam Lewis has been a great influence on our young squad as captain. Thank you to the three of you for your passion to make this squad reach its potential. Finally, the biggest thank you goes to my wife Becky and children, Luca and Sophia for your love and support, which allows me to commit so much time and energy to this sport.
Enjoy the game!
