Fylde Vandals 10 Thornton/Cleveleys 2nds 22
It was a pretty damp day at The Woodlands for this local derby between Fylde Vandals and Thornton/Cleveleys 2nds. Both teams had good numbers so the scene was set for what everyone knew would be a competitive tussle. The home side had a good mix of youth and experience and there was a Vandals and Fylde debut for new boy Ryan Etheridge.
The Vandals started strongly using their forwards to good effect. Their lineout functioned well from the word go and once the ball was won they made excellent metres every time. Indeed from two of these set pieces tries were scored. Tom Godfrey continued his fine scoring record by grabbing the first and the skipper Richard Mason, playing as an extra back row at 9, scored the second. Unfortunately Phil Swindells wasn’t able to add any of the extras.
T/C didn’t really have an answer for the rolling mauls undertaken by the Vandals but on several occasions the Fylde team were a little guilty of coughing up the ball at crucial times. Consequently there were a couple of try scoring opportunities that went begging. The game ebbed and flowed through the first half with some good exchanges form both sets of backs and more trundling and rumbling from the big boys up front.
In the second period the Vandals tried to carry on more of the good work from the first half but T/C began to settle into the game and their forwards became more effective at the set pieces. They were quickly on the score sheet as one of their backs outpaced the Vandals defence to go under the sticks.
As hard as they tried the Fylde boys couldn’t quite match their dominance of the first half and as the game wore on T/C took control and were able to score a couple more tries taking as it turned out an unassailable lead. The Vandals worked tirelessly until the end but ran out of steam and T/C took the game 22-10.
Thanks very much to T/C for the game and we’ll see you again next week for the rearranged away fixture. The original game last year was abandoned at half time after some end of the world rain made the T/C pitch unplayable. Thanks to all the Vandals who turned out, it was a tough no-nonsense game and I’m sure it’ll be more of the same next Saturday.
