‘Lono’ confirmed as player-coach for 2019-20

Alex Loney has been confirmed as Forwards Coach and player ahead of the 2019-20 Centenary season.

Alex (35) joined Fylde from Rotherham in the summer of 2011, played a full season in 2011/12 and a few games the following campaign before suffering a serious knee injury which kept him out of action for the best part of two seasons. He was back in the action in 2014-15 although school duties at Stonyhurst College severely restricted his playing opportunities. In May 2017 playing for Lancashire at Cheshire he ruptured his achilles and that once more kept him out of action for several months. A move to be Director of Rugby at Lancaster Royal Grammar School in 2018-19 has enabled him to play much more regularly and he made 17 appearances last season.

Loney proudly led Lancashire to the 2011 County Championship title at Twickenham. He grew up in Manchester and played junior rugby for Aldwinians & Sedgley Park before moving to Kirkham Grammar School.

He gained representative honours with England U’18s & U’19s before moving to Leicester Tigers Academy in 2003. He joined Nottingham in 2004 and went on to make 123 1st team appearances in five seasons.

He made a major contribution to the success of the Club and was named supporters player of the season. A season with French club Avignon in 2009/10 was followed by a move to Rotherham Titans in 2010/11 where he made 28 1st team appearances and helped them to the Championship play-offs.

Most of his senior rugby career has been at hooker but he can also play at tight-head prop where he has featured for Fylde.

Warren Spragg said: “Lono has become a core part of everything we do on and off the pitch in recent seasons. The work he has done as a coach with our young forward pack has been excellent, enabling us to compete against much more experienced teams on a weekly basis. Since changing jobs it has been great to see him come back into contention on the playing side as well, where his physicality and experience are invaluable.

“As we’ve seen with his Lancashire performance over the last 2 seasons, he is certainly still a player who can have considerable impact on the game and I’m excited to see how he continues to push Ben Gregory over the next 12 months by coaching and competing with him.

Alex Loney said: “I’m delighted to be continuing with Fylde RFC. Since joining a number of years ago, I have always loved representing the Club and being associated with Fylde and its members.

“Being in a player/coach role is a challenge, but I always try my upmost to develop and support the players to perform at their best, especially the forwards. I am also very aware that when I take the field, I have an important job to do for the team, and perform!
“I am excited for the coming season, especially it being such a significant one being the club’s Centenary year. I look forward to contributing to the best of my ability so it is a successful year for the club.”

Alex Loney is sponsored by the KR Group.
