Fylde’s 1st XV squad at Sheffield Tigers includes South African born wing or centre Lex Botha for the first time. The 25 year old grew up in East London and he eventually moved to Durban to join the Sharks Academy. He progressed to the Sharks U’21s in their Currie Cup competition and also made the Sharks 7s squad.
His first move abroad was in 2015 when he played a season of 1st grade rugby in Australia for New South Wales club Albury Steamers during which he was also called up to the Brumbies Provincial team. He moved to Wales in 2016 to play initially for Builth Wells before moving to Welsh Premiership club Llandovery RFC. More recently in the 2017-8 season, he has been playing in Germany for Leipzig.
Lex (6′ & 15st) is quick and powerful and has a productive try scoring record. He joined the Club in the summer but has had to wait for a visa before being eligible to play in the National Leagues. He’s made a number of appearances for the Hawks and a few for Sale Jets this season.
He came to Fylde Head Coach Warren Spragg‘s attention through Sale Sharks’ Scottish international winger, Byron McGuigan, as they have been friends since being team mates at the (Natal) Sharks Academy.
Warren Spragg said: “The outside backs are going well but Lex will strengthen that area. He is very powerful and a good finisher, so he should be an exciting player for people to watch.”
Lex Botha said: “I’m really looking forward to playing for Fylde. It’s a great new opportunity and I’m looking forward to learning new things. I’m impressed by the attacking ambitions of the coaches and squad. Running rugby will suit my style of play.”
