Fylde Hawks Manager Warren Atkinson describes the newly structured Raging Bull Premier League and the team’s ambitions for the 2017-18 season.
“The Raging Bull Premier and Championship fixtures for the 2017-18 season have been published and they look different to previous years.
“Towards the end of last season all of the managers were invited to a meeting at Hoppers by the Raging Bull North West Intermediate Leagues Committee. Those of you familiar with the improvements in the Hawks’ performances in recent years will be aware we (and other teams) struggled to provide quality competition week in, week out. We also suffered from a number of cry offs which left our players without a game.
“This season there is a smaller Premiership league consisting of eight teams. We will play each other home and away twice during the coming season. This should guarantee all teams competitive rugby which not only benefits players, but allows the 1st XV management team to better assess Hawks players in these matches and provide a better framework for fringe players to play for the Hawks.
“Another change is the allocation of points for games. In an effort to reflect other leagues and to encourage ambitious rugby a bonus point can be achieved for scoring four tries and a losing bonus point will be given to a team staying within seven points of the winning team. Our thanks to the Raging Bull Committee for listening to us. It’s much appreciated.
“It’s a tough start to the season and there will be no easy games. Pre-season is nearly upon us and we hope our players have enjoyed a break and will be fit and ready to hit the ground running. This season Dan Orwin will benefit from the support of Paul Moran who will assist with coaching. Ian Pearson has also stepped up to the plate and will assist with management of this promising group of players. He has some excellent ideas and initiatives in the pipeline, so watch this space.
“We continue to encourage new up and coming players to join the squad as well as those players who have drifted away whilst at university or elsewhere. Please get in contact with me – you’ll receive a warm welcome.
“Finally, we hope to increase our base support on match days. There is already an excellent nucleus of supporters led by relatives and family. Please come down and support the lads whenever you can. It will be much appreciated.”
