Last season’s games between Fylde Hawks and Macclesfield 2nds produced closely contested affairs, often with the forwards dominating the flow of the game. So the match on Saturday was forecasted to be a really tense affair, with game management being at the forefront of the match.
The Hawks fielded a strong team, despite four players being called up to the 1st XV game away at Leicester Lions.
Captain Griffin elected to receive the ball at the KO. In the 2nd minute, Foster scored a try on the left-hand side, with Pearson successfully converting. Score 7 – 0. In the 9th minute Fisher crossed the try line, closely followed in the 11th minute by Botha. Both converted successfully by Pearson. Score 21 – 0.
In the 18th minute Fisher crossed the try line again for his second try. In the 25th minute Whitehead scored a try. Score 33 – 0. The 32nd minute saw Botha score his second try, which was successfully converted by Pearson and in the 39th minute Jones crossed the line in the far-left hand corner. Score 45 – 0
Half Time 45 – 0
The Hawks were clearly dominating the game, with all the points being scored by the backs. When the traffic is one way, it can become difficult for sides to focus on the team performance and Head Coach Dan Orwin set some objectives for the team for the second half.
In the second period, in the 58th minute, Stainer crossed the try line in the far-left corner, closely followed by Macaulay in the 60th minute. Score 55 – 0. In the 61st minute, a Yellow Card was given to a Macclesfield player for a tip tackle. In the 75th minute, Whitehead crossed the try line again, which was converted by Pearson. Score 62 – 0
Full Time 62 – 0
Credit must be given to the Macclesfield team, who travelled without any subs and stuck at the game for the whole 80 minutes. Credit to the referee as well as he ensured the game flowed smoothly and managed the players throughout the game effectively. When one team is clearly running away with a game, it can often become scrappy.
A special mention should also go to Tom Fox who, in the 60th minute, stormed through the Macclesfield forwards to find himself in unfamiliar territory. He ran towards the posts with only one player to beat and the whole Macclesfield team chasing him down. However, 10 metres out, he looked to off load the ball to his left, only to find the Hawks players were struggling to keep pace with him. Whilst no try was scored on this occasion, it should be recorded in the history books that Fox sprinted for over 50 metres, leaving both sets of players in his wake!
