At a charming, informal evening at the Woodlands on Friday, 15th February, Fylde RFC officials, members and supporters paid an affectionate tribute to Sir Bill Beaumont and his contribution to the Club and rugby generally for more than 50 years. As always, Bill, accompanied by his wife Hilary, mixed easily with a host of former team mates, friends and club supporters, swapping stories, banter and memories.
Chairman Dave Young, who packed down so often in the 2nd row with Sir Bill in the late 1970s and early 1980s, spoke for the whole Club when he presented him with a glass wine cooler inscribed “Presented to Sir Bill Beaumont for services to rugby from Members of Fylde Rugby Football Club”.
Sir Bill responded by thanking everyone who had attended and for the generous gift. No one had any doubts about his love of the Club with whom he’s been committed since joining as a 17 year old in 1969, following on from his father and grandfather, and succeeded by his three sons, all of whom have also played in the famous claret and gold. As the Club is on the threshold of entering its Centenary season in 2019-20, the names of ‘Fylde’ and ‘Sir Bill Beaumont’ will be forever interlinked.
