The latest Fylde Mini-Junior player to earn national recognition is Laura Perrin – who could now stake a claim to the title of Fylde’s First Lady! Learning her skills and game sense at Fylde RFC from U’7 through to U’12, Laura’s determination and capabilities quickly earnt her the respect of her peers and coaches. Opposition coaches and parents who vocally encouraged their players to “keep away from the girl” during fixtures gave an early indication that she would capable of playing at the very highest level. With mixed rugby stopping after U12, and only a few girls teams in Lancashire, subsequent development took Laura to Vale of Lune and West Park St Helens where her talent was recognised and rewarded with County & Divisional Honours from U’13 through to U’18.

With Waterloo securing a place in the Tyrrells Premiership for 2017/8, and a number of her peers already playing for them, it was no surprise that Laura set her sight on becoming a Premiership player and she made her debut coming off the bench against Richmond on 28th October 2017 and gave a very good account of herself. With her sights firmly set on getting national recognition, Laura dedicated the summer break to improving her fitness and working on her all round game under the guidance of ‘Loo head coach Giles Heagerty. Her hard work and determination quickly paid off with starts this year against Richmond, Wasps, Harlequins, Loughborough and Darlington.

Regularly playing against England capped opponents, holding her own at her preferred position at insider centre, and getting on the scoreboard resulted in Laura receiving an invitation to England U20 trials in October that involved two 3 day camps in Surrey where a total of approx. 50 players were put through their paces under the watchful eye of U20 Head Coach Jo Yapp, England Head Coach Simon Middleton and his generals. The England U’20s squad was announced by the RFU on 1st November and Laura is looking forwards to the next stages of the programme that will culminate in the spring with games against the Army, and home and away ties with France U20.

Go on Laura!
