Connor Wilkinson has signed for Fylde’s 2019-20 campaign in National Two (North).
Connor’s rugby education came through Preston Grasshoppers Mini-Juniors and at Kirkham Grammar School where he became a first choice player through the various age levels, skippering the teams including the 1st XV. He also represented Lancashire at U’14s-U’16s levels before moving on to the Sale Sharks development system. He comes from a sporting family, including three talented sons – rugby is deep in his DNA.
Connor (23) earned a rugby scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he is a current student (and skippered the MMU 7s squad in a recent unbeaten tour to China), and has achieved representative honours for England Students and for the touring England Counties U’20s squad. He’s also made a number of appearances for Sharks Jets, the Sharks 7s squads and more recently for the senior Lancashire team. He made his Fylde National League team debut in Feb 2016 and he became a 1st choice centre in 2017-18, making 83 appearances to date and scoring 32 tries. He’s a clever, creative player who does his share of tackling and covering, and he’s a crowd favourite too. He’s proved incredibly durable, with 59 appearances in Fylde’s 60 National League fixtures in the last two seasons, mainly at centre, occasionally at fullback.
Warren Spragg said: “Connor has had another excellent year and was pushing Tom Carleton all the way in the try scoring charts until late in the season. He has matured as a player and is certainly one of the best centres in this league who is a real match winner on his day. He has shown adaptability by playing at full back as well as inside centre, and partnered Scott Rawlings effectively at outside centre for Lancashire as well.
“This will be very important next season where we will have a lot of competition in the back line and we will be able to use a number of different combinations depending on how we want to approach the upcoming game. He is an ambitious young player with a love for the game that is a pleasure to see. He would play 7 games a week if he could, and usually gets at least 2 in!”
Connor Wilkinson said: “I’m excited to be a part of this young squad going into the Club’s Centenary season. I enjoyed the campaign last year and look forward to improving next season, not only as a player but as a person as well. I am enjoying my rugby here at Fylde, with a group of great lads, playing my style of rugby, chipping in with a few tries and performing consistently throughout the year.
“The 19/20 season will be even harder than last year, with some really strong teams fighting for every point. I can’t wait to get back out onto the pitch, I’m sure the other lads are as well. Looking forward to your continued support.”
