Ben Gregory started playing rugby at Wigan RUFC, alongside now Fylde team mates Tom Carleton and Nick Ashcroft, from the age 10 until U’15s. He moved to Kirkham Grammar school to study for ‘A’ levels where he played at hooker for the 1st XV for two years, going unbeaten in both seasons. He earned representative honours for Lancashire at U’15s to U’18s levels. He made the U’16s and U’18s North of England squads and then more recently played a full season for the Sale Sharks U’18s Academy. He was selected for England Counties’ U’20s tour to Georgia in 2018 and made his senior Lancashire County Championship debut in May 2019.
Ben, 21, joined Fylde in the 2016-16 season, made a number of appearances for the Hawks, then on the 1st XV replacements bench, before starting his first National One match at Plymouth Albion in September 2017. He marked it in the best possible way by scoring his first try for the Club that day. He’s made a total of 66 1st team league appearances, sharing the hooker’s duties last season mainly with Alex Loney, and was an ‘ever present’ during that campaign. He’s a tough, mobile and speedy player who has looked quite at home at National League level.
Warren Spragg said: “Ben is a great lad to coach. He is hard-working, ambitious and backs himself to play and perform every week regardless of the his competition or opposition. He was outstanding for us in 2018-19 and I think that along with Alex Loney we have the best two hookers in the league at Fylde. There are parts of his game that have needed to improve and these are coming with experience. I am sure that he will be very influential next season so I am very happy he will still be at Fylde.”
Ben Gregory said: “I’m very happy to be staying at Fylde for another season. 2018-19 didn’t end the way we all wanted it to but was a good season overall. All the lads are excited about the season ahead and hope to be up the league table come April next year.”
Ben will be sponsored in 2019-20 by Cognite Ltd, specialists in team dynamics and leadership.
