Saturday 7th October saw the Fylde Hawks welcome Sale FC 2nds to the Woodlands, who were two places below the Hawks and had experienced a similar start to the season.
Sale only travelled with 14 players, whilst the Hawks were able to list a young but strong 18 players. Often, when teams are playing with fewer players, players put in the extra effort and this was the case with Sale.
Within the first minute, the Hawks conceded a penalty which Sale chose to kick and take the 3 points. This was proving to be a typical start to the Hawks games. The home side, with a full 15 on the pitch, spent a lot of time in the Sale half and it was not until the 25th minute, that Mark Capstick could cross the try line. Josh Melvin successfully converted.
Sale proved dogged in defence and at half time the score remained Hawks 7 – 3 Sale.
A few changes were made at half time, with new prop Ben Gill replacing Adam Joyner. The game continued in the same way as the first half, with the Hawks attacking and making handling errors at the critical moment. This allowed a robust Sale to clear their lines and attack for brief moments. It was not until the 58th minute that another try was scored, this time by Torky. The conversion was missed. Score 12 – 3.
A yellow card was given to a Sale player in the 60th minute which shortly after, allowed the Hawks to eventually work the ball wide, for Christian Williams to cross the white line on the left-hand side. The conversion was missed.
The last 10 minutes of the game saw Sale give a final push and with their 14 players on the pitch stepped up their efforts., The Hawks’ Tom Beresford was sin binned for final 10 minutes to even up the player numbers. Sale eventually broke through the Hawks defence under the stick and scored a well-deserved try. The conversion was made. Score: Hawks 17 – 10 Sale FC 2nds.
Final Score Fylde Hawks 17 – 10 Sale FC.
Whilst the Hawks are happy with the win, credit must go to Sale FC whom travelled with 14 player and made the Hawks work hard for the full 80 minutes.
