The Hawks travelled to newly promoted Lymm 2nds on Saturday 15th September for our first encounter between these teams in the Halbro North West Premier League.
Due to several injuries with our forwards, some changes on Friday and even 5 minutes before KO, meant that Whitehead started at 6 and Stanier (traditionally a back!) started at 7. Our pack was totally different to our previous games.
For the first 8 minutes, both team attached and defended robustly; however, the Hawks gave away a simple penalty, which Lymm successfully converted. Score 3 – 0. In the 15th minute, Stanier crossed the try line left of the posts but the conversion was not converted. Score 3 – 5. On the 19th minute, another penalty was awarded to Lymm, although the kick was in the right direction but short on distance. Both sides continued to make handling errors and with the Hawks trying to push the game too much, allowing Lymm to score and covert. Score 10 – 5. The Lymm pack was now growing in confidence and on the 38th minute, worked a try, which was successfully converted. Score 17 – 5.
Half Time: 17 – 5
The Hawks started the second half playing rugby in the Fylde way and within 3 minutes of the restart Lanigan crossed the white line. Score 17 – 10. Ten minutes, later Lymm scored a try. Score 22 – 10. In the 62nd minute a penalty was again awarded to Lymm which was missed once more.
In the 55th minute, Forster was replaced with a suspected jaw fracture. With Wilkinson, already off with a sore neck, a reshuffle in the forwards and backs was forced upon us.
On the 65th minute, Botha crossed the line after a well worked try, successfully converted by Lanigan. Score 22 – 17
For the remainder of the game, Lymm scored a penalty kick and two converted tries, leaving the final score 35 – 17.
Full Time: 35 – 17
Whilst a very frustrating and disappointing game for the Hawks, who generally felt they didn’t get out of 2nd gear, all credit must be given to them as a squad. More than six players played out of position and consistent changes had to be made throughout the game. The Lymm pack, to their credit, dominated the game for Lymm and they took due advantage for the victory.
Our next game is against Macclesfield 2nds and it’s our FIRST game at the Woodlands this season, so please get down and support the players for a 1500hrs KO. Its FREE ENTRY & the BAR will be OPEN.
