The Vixens - Nov 2009 in the Den
It’s been a busy few weeks for the Vixens recently, although most of it has been off the pitch. With two games already cancelled the team were all geared up & raring to go for their first away match this season at Leigh RFU. Unfortunately. the fates stepped in and the ‘monsoon’ weather at the weekend dashed any hopes of them getting their boots on this side of Christmas, or so they thought! Â
An announcement that the Vixens have long been waiting for came this week regarding the Lancashire County RFU ‘Cotton Cup’ League (named after Fran Cotton). Starting in December and continuing throughout the new year, rugby tournaments/festivals will be held throughout Lancashire and the Vixens are entered! So the Vixens will now have the chance to let out any frustrations over the lack of game time & for the newer members - Holly Thomason, Jody May, Michelle Gavagan, Helen Johnson and Jenny Cottam - it will be a chance for them to join in the fun!.
The first festival is taking place at the Preston Sports Arena on the 6th December, kick off is at 13.30 and the team would welcome all and any support at what promises to be a great day for women’s rugby.
The news was received by the Vixens’ captain and scrum half, Jammy (Victoria Calder), who had this to say about the team’s chances; Â
"At long last the Vixens will have a platform to show everyone what we can do!. We will endeavour to put all our hard work from training to good use and produce some high-quality rugby. I think we have every chance of winning the Cotton Cup and I have no doubt that these regular fixtures will certainly benefit the girls’ standard of play. Many of the newcomers have shown great potential and now with the regular match practice, will go from strength to strength. I would also like to thank the club and in particular Mark Nelson for his help and support in getting us into this league as it wasn’t a straightforward task."
The Fun Stuff …
Off the pitch things have been a little bit more hectic for the Vixens and a lot of hard work and effort was put in by them for club’s 2010 Calendar ‘Vixens have some Cheek’. It was hard work being pampered for the day, hair and make-up done for them, but like the troopers they are, they turned up and struck a pose like there was nothing to it! Â
A lot of work also went into organising the official launch day, not only by the team but also by club members, all of which would have been for nothing if it wasn’t for the many supporters who came along to help make the launch as much fun as it was, and judging from the sales figures the calendar went down well. It’s even got a mention in the January edition of the Rugby World, out now! (page 29).
