Fylde strengthens relationship with UCLAN
Fylde have strengthened its relationship with rugby players at the University of Central Lancashire. UCLAN have been involved along with most of the other NW universities in the recent highly successful Student Freshers Tournaments staged by the Lancashire County RUFC Development Centres.
This initiative is designed to encourage new university students to play rugby, in particular at their local clubs. This has already benefitted young players at UCLAN as a number have recently linked up with the Woodlands club. Seven fresher students at the University are playing on Saturday for Fylde's 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams.
Lancashire RFU's North Lancashire Centre Manager, Alan Holmes said: "This scheme is already paying off by engaging students with their local clubs. We are hoping other clubs in the area take the opportunity created by Lancashire's initiative."
Sam Bensky, player-manager of Fylde's 4th team, the Vikings, said: "The introduction of new players from UCLAN has helped us field a motivated and refreshed squad this season. It has made a real difference and is very positive."
