Fylde RFC Beach Rugby Tournament, 18th July 2009

In the third year of Fylde Beach rugby tournament, the day began with a strong wind and it threatened to be wet as in previous years. However, in the afternoon the sun was shining and there were plenty of smiling faces from the 15 teams who took part. These included local businesses, groups such as Aardvark Antiques, Fylde Council (Top Gun), RPL, Royal Life Boats and Learning Curve. There were teams from schools such as Fleetwood Sports College and Arnold Old Boys.
 
There were a number of club-based teams such as Warwick RUFC and BAE Warton RUFC (Lizanne’s Luvlies), along with a number of teams from Fylde RFC. These included Team Vandal, the Colts, Los Masivos, Guns of Fylde coast and the Randy Tagsters.

Although not the largest competition to date, this was definitely the most successful. There were approximately 150 participants and the number of women taking part was 48. This is over double the amount from last year. In addition, there was a larger number of spectators supporting the teams which added to the atmosphere of the day. There were a staggering 514 tries in the 60 games played in the cup, plate and bowl competitions.

Cup Winners – The Guns of Fylde Coast
Plate Winners – Aardvark Antiques
Bowl Winners – Learning Curve

The games were played in a great spirit and refereed by volunteers from Fylde RFC and the Rugby Football Union. Many thanks must go to them for their efforts and a big thanks to Fylde Council and the RFU for their support in the organisation of the event. Also big thanks to Carne Burke for the fantastic picture of the day.
