KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS V HUTTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL, SATURDAY 24 JANUARY 2009
U15A XV
Won 10-7
KGS were lucky to scrape a win against Hutton Grammar on Saturday. The heavy conditions were certainly a challenge. The U15’s made a lot of basic errors in the first half and were unable to play any constructive rugby.
In the second half Hutton continued to defend courageously and caused KGS to make mistakes. However KGS did start to dominate the contact area and managed to score just after half-time.
The score remained the same until the last minute of play where the backs managed to move the ball swiftly to put Sam Hall into a gap and he scored in the corner to win the game 10-7.
U14A XV
Won 27-12
An outstanding performance against a tough determined Hutton side. This was by far the best performance to date and highlighted the progress made by all the players. Charles Redshaw and Matthew Beatty were excellent throughout the game with Jack Smith, Ryan Wilkinson and Ben Rhodes-Powers having notable performances in the backs.
Tries:Â Ben Rhodes-Powers, Charles Redshaw, Jock Smith, Matthew Beatty
Conversions:Â Â Matthew Beatty (2)
U13A XV
Lost 0-7
This was an enthralling game between two fierce rivals which saw KGS dominate the first half against a physically larger Hutton side. KGS tackled tenaciously to keep Hutton penned into their 22 and when they tried to kick their way out Rob Lavelle and Ryan Powell intelligently drilled the ball back deep into the Hutton half. KGS managed to drive over the Hutton line but were held up. KGS continued to press but could not score. In fact the KGS pressure continued into the second half with the back row of Harry Mason, Jonathan Chan and Lewis Leach snuffing out any drives from the Hutton pack with forceful tackling. Unfortunately the game was decided with one try scored after a sustained drive by Hutton, although KGS rallied at the end to try and force a draw. This was KGS’s best performance by far and the boys should be congratulated for their sustained effort.
U12A XV
Drew 12-12
The team were slow to get going against a Hutton side that were big and this appeared to initially intimidate the KGS side. It was therefore unfortunate just as the forwards were starting to produce their trademark rucking game the big Hutton winger broke through some weak tackling to run the length of the field to score. However, KGS quickly responded with Wilf Rhodes scoring a try after a period of KGS pressure. This gave KGS A 7-5 lead at half time. Once again KGS started the second half slowly and Hutton quickly scored a try to take the lead. The pattern of the game followed the same as the first half with KGS taking control with their forwards playing superbly, in which Scott Collins who was outstanding. Connor Wilkinson scored an equalising try but unfortunately it was not converted. The game ended in a draw but KGS were the better side.
