KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL v ROSSALL - WEDNESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 2010
U15A XV
KGS 62 ROSSALL 0
KGS were too powerful for Rossall throughout the whole match. The U15's started really well with strong and direct running from Josh Burrows and Jonathan Chan. KGS were the first to score, only one minute into the first half and by half time they were 42 points ahead. Rossall managed to put together a few phases of play in the second half but the KGS defence led by Thomas Hunter and Dan Jones, was too strong and held off any opportunity to score. The game was stopped early when the score reached 62-0.
KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS V WIRRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL - SATURDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2010
1st XV
Won KGS 26 Wirral 3
KGS 1st XV dominated Wirral Grammar School from the start and very quickly second row Sam Peet scored a fine individual try to give KGS the opening score.
KGS allowed Wirral back into the game by not concentrating and making a number of mistakes despite having complete control of the match. Captain David Egelstaff managed to re-focus his players and 10 minutes before half time finished off an excellent try where forwards and backs had interlinked and Charlie Swarbrick converted for KGS to take a 12-3 lead. Very quickly KGS asserted their superiority and after an excellent run by hooker Josh Woods, prop Jon Evans sprinted over for a try after some fine support play. After half time KGS played some very solid rugby and concentrate on putting behind the mistakes that they had in the first half. Sam Peet got his second try finishing off a flowing KGS move and Charlie Swarbrick again converted. Soon afterwards Josh Woods scored a try which completed a very pleasing morning for the talented hooker. Late on full back Stanley Graham completed the scoring with a try in the corner after space was created by a number of forward drives. KGS also look forward to the return of some of their injured players as they look forward to next week's fixture with St Ambrose College.
2nd XV
KGS 48 Wirral 0
With the side seeing as number of changes from the previous week, it took ten minutes for the team to get into their stride. Then a strong forward drive led to a well taken try by captain Rob Malings and with the side very much on the front foot it was only a matter of time before the next try was scored. A sixty metre break from Harrison Moulding led to him being tackled on the opposition try line. Quick recycled ball by Craig Whalley-Hunter led to Will Fleuriot crashing over for an excellent try. Wirral then had their best part of the match and the score stayed at 10-0 at half time.
In the second half KGS’s superior fitness showed and some excellent passages of play led to some excellent tries being scored. With Adam Whalley and Jack Ingham controlling proceedings up front and Ryan Vaughan, Harrison Moulding and Oliver Jumps creating gaps outside it was not long before the tide of Adam Galley (2), Craig Whalley-Hunter (2), Fraser Burnie and Nathan White all crossed the try line. With Oliver Jump converting four of the tries, the opposition asked for the match to be stopped ten minutes before the end. A good performance that now needs to be repeated against St Ambrose.
U16 XV
Drew 17-17
In their first game of the season, KGS U16's recorded a draw against a strong Wirral GS side. In the first half, Wirral dominated territory and scored within ten minutes of the start. Wirral had most of the possession and would have taken more of a lead but for some poor handling near the KGS line. KGS struggled to find shape during this period but held out with some strong individual defence. However, KGS did break away and managed to cross the line for a converted try by Sam Fuentes-Moreno.
In the second half KGS started to settle and played some good rugby. A well worked try finished off by Sam Fuentes-Moreno extended the lead to 12-5, and this was quickly followed by a fine opportunist try by Woodward who had an exceptional game. The game looked to be in KGS’s grasp until Wirral capitalised on a lapse in concentration to run the whole length of the field and score under the posts. This try was converted, and therefore the match was drawn.
U15A XV
KGS 19 Wirral 5
Having lost to Wirral GS last year, KGS U15's knew it was going to be a challenging match. KGS made an impressive start. Lewis Leech profited from a smart back row move, scoring under the post, the first of his three tries of the match. Wirral GS managed to fight back and scored just before half time. Wirral fought back in the second half and were close to scoring on a number of occasions. Fortunately the KGS defence held strong. Some strong tackling from Theo Harvey and Harry Mason meant that Lewis Leech could profit from a number of counter-attacks. Overall, this was a solid team performance.
U14A XV
KGS 10 Wirral 30
The team started well scoring an early try through Ellis Clark. However, for much of the first half the forwards struggled to gain possession and win the ball. The Wirral pack were a little more determined and quicker to the ball. Also too many missed tackles put the KGS defence continually on the back foot. In the second half the team played with a lot more conviction and purpose. Daniel Broughton and Alex Whalley performing particularly well. The result was a fair reflection of the game, but despite the second half pressure we were unable to claw back the deficit.
2 tries: Ellis Clark. MoM: Daniel Broughton
U13A XV
KGS 35 Wirral 26
KGS came away from Wirral having produced a much improved second half performance after finding themselves 21-19 ahead at the break. Jack Campbell scored KGS's first try after some fine driving play from the forwards. Oliver Crankshaw scored again soon after with a jinking run, however this meant KGS relaxed and poor tackling allowed Wirral to storm back to level the game at 14 all. Charles Abbott, who had a fine all round game, pushed KGS ahead once again just before half-time. The second period was a much more rumbustious affair with KGS rucking with more purpose and tackling with much more ferocity which allowed them to stretch their lead further when Oliver Kitchen, on an arching run, scored in the corner. Wirral came back yet again to leave KGS only two points ahead but Abbott surged over under the posts to give KGS some breathing space. All of KGS's five tries were converted by Todd Roper who kicked superbly throughout, many from positions wide out.
U13 B XV
KGS 27 Wirral 5
KGS made the journey to Wirral with a team that had several positional changes and little time together. Three of the forwards were in fact playing their first ever game in the pack, having previously been backs.
KGS had a slow start, playing up hill and into the wind. The team defended well as Wirral dominated possession and territory, perhaps most pleasingly all 15 players were tackling and working as a team to stop Wirral crossing the try line. As the game progressed KGS became much more threatening, Roland Burt showed great speed to run the length of the field getting dragged down a metre short of the try line. This position led to Matt Thomas scoring from a set move off the scrum. Wirral then came back into the game. KGS stopped Wirral scoring several times by holding Wirral players up over the line and forcing last second knock-ones with excellent tackles. Wirral finally broke through making the score 5-5. KGS improved greatly during the second half. The team began to attack as a unit allowing Matt Thomas to run in a couple of tries and Roland Burt to score a length of the field interception. Wirral were pressing on the KGS try line for the final minutes but KGS doggedly held out. A pleasing first outing, good pace from Walsh and Le Saint, strong scrummaging from Lavelle and Leeks, excellent tackling from Neill and Lewthwaite, a great combination of skill and work rate from Clowes and Guthrie all excellently led by captain Elliot ‘Ray’ Turncock.
