KGS v Sedbergh, 20th Nov 2010

RUGBY RESULTS V SEDBERGH ON SATURDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2010

1ST XV

KGS 5 Sedbergh 26

KGS 1st XV pushed Sedbergh School all the way in a terrific encounter. If KGS had taken their chances they may well have come away with a win. Without frontline kicker David Egelstaff  KGS missed three easy penalties and an easy conversion, opportunities against top sides do not come often. Not only did they squander 11 points in kicks, KGS also created such a  good opening to score a try the crowd gasped in dismay as this chance was blown. KGS could and should have had  a clear lead going into half time but instead found themselves 14 points behind after two lapses in concentration. Despite this set back KGS raised the game and no.8 Tyrone Rankin opened the scoring in the second half after a neat back row move. Hooker Josh Woods was in outstanding form and was well supported  by flankers Bobby Garlington and Elliot Crowe. Scrum half Charlie Swarbrick made a number of sniping runs and both Michael Simmons and Tom Hurst made a number of breaks. KGS battled hard to the end, but could not breech the Sebergh line again. Late on when tiredness had set in Sedbergh scored two tries. The 26 - 5 scoreline was not a true reflection of the game and KGS will rue the golden opportunity they had missed.

2nd XV

KGS 0 Sedbergh 58

A disappointing result, considering that we lost the final 20 minutes by 7-0 after dominating play through the game plan that the team had worked on all week. The seven points conceded unfortunately occurred from a break away. However up until this final twenty minutes, the team played an expansive game which played to Sedbergh’s strength and only ferocious defence stopped other tries being run in. Oliver Jump unfortunately was injured and it was only after this that the team started to play. Adam Galley worked tirelessly to attack whilst Justin Lam, Fraser Burnie and Harrison Moulding were immense in defence. A lot of reflection on the initial self destructing performance needs to be undertaken this week before Merchant Taylors' visit next week. However the team needs to focus on those final twenty minutes against a strong Sedbergh team.

U16 XV

KGS 0 Sedbergh 36

Despite being at full strength, KGS could not match the pace, power and skill of an unbeaten Sedbergh side.

KGS played well for the first twenty minutes, defending well and attempting to push forward with the limited possession available. However, the defence could only hold out for so long and a try was conceded in the corner. Soon after this KGS had a real chance to score but squandered a line out near the Sedbergh line. Sedbergh capitalised and worked the ball back up the pitch to score another try against the fourteen men of KGS, reduced in number through a sin-binning of a player.

Resuming the second half with a deficit of twelve points was always going to be a difficult task for KGS to overcome. The relentless Sedbergh attack produced two more tries. With the game lost KGS made plenty of changes. This did not reduce the strength of the KGS team and in fact KGS played well for the last ten minutes and were unlucky not to register a score.

U15A XV

KGS 3 Sedbergh 48

KGS struggled with the pace of the game right from kick-off and by the time the U15s adjusted, we were 12-3 down. The forwards competed well and KGS had chances but were unable to put some points on the score board. KGS managed to hold Sedbergh to 21-3 at half time. Solid defence in the centres led by Thomas Hunter and Daniel Jones was crucial. In the second half the tired KGS side was exposed. Sedbergh managed to recycle quick ball at breakdowns and with the clinical finishes, scoring a couple of tries.

U15B XV

KGS 30 Sedbergh 7

KGS played extremely well throughout this match, controlling the set pieces with their larger forwards and allowing the speedy backs to attack the Sedbergh line at almost every opportunity. The first try was scored by the scrum half Alex Ward after concerted pressure from the kick off. From another scrum, the back-rower Tommy Lee crashed over for a try which was converted by Alex Ward. The only missed tackle of the afternoon allowed Sedbergh a try just before half time but KGS rallied again in the second half with further tries from Navid Solton, Harry Goossens and the try of the match from the Spanish debutant, Manuel Loren. This victory was well deserved after the discipline and commitment KGS showed throughout the match

U14A XV

KGS 0 Sedbergh 23

Despite the result this was by far the best performance of the season to date. Sedbergh were a class act and played some outstanding rugby, the backs in particular were quite exceptional. Nevertheless the defensive qualities of the KGS team were nothing short of gladiatorial. KGS conceded an early try in the first half, there onwards we took the game to Sedbergh spending large periods of the game in their own half. David King, Conner Wilkinson, and Henry Cameron all came close to scoring with some outstanding rugby. The Sedbergh defensive was proving to be very difficult to breach. Harvey O’Connell and Ellis Clark worked extremely hard on the wings making penetrating runs and also making crucial tackles against fast opposition. At half time, KGS were down 7-0, after 25 minutes of some exhilarating rugby. In the second half, the KGS forwards battled hard against much bigger opposition and there was some superb individual performances. Wilf Rhodes, Oscar Twitchett, James Griggs, and Alex Whalley to name but a few. The other two Sedbergh tries came down the wings were speed proved the key point. At the end of the game both teams knew they had been in a very tough and physical encounter, but it was without doubt a marvellous game to watch and an excellent example of schoolboy rugby.

U14B XV

KG 10 Sedbergh 7

KGS U14B team achieved their first victory of the season over the mighty Sedbergh school.  In the first five minutes KGS had dominated the play with aggressive and powerful tackling and rucking.  Then hooker Jack Campbell dived over the line for KGS to take the lead 5–0.  There were plenty of other opportunities to increase the advantage in the first half, but it was Sedbergh who scored next to take a 7–5 lead at half time.  In an even second half KGS eventually managed to get over the opponents try line via the outstanding forward play of Henry Joyner.  With 10 minutes left KGS kept their cool and deservedly stayed in front until the final whistle.  Credit must go to the whole team for a superb performance in every aspect of the game, and this will give the boys great confidence for the rest of the season.

U12 XV v Ripley St Thomas

The game against Ripley St. Thomas was played in beautiful autumn sunshine and the fine weather allowed both teams to try and play handling rugby. KGS took the lead with a try from Jake Lonsdale after some fine passing along the back line. The second try in complete contrast was a kick and rush effort once again scored by Jake Lonsdale. Chris Walker scored a third at the beginning of the second half to give KGS a 15–0 lead. Ripley fought back with two tries but KGS were eventual winners 15-12.
