KGS U'16s in Sedburgh 7s

Kirkham Grammar School Rugby Report

Sedbergh U16’s Sevens – Wednesday 26 February 2009

After being drawn in a difficult group, the U16 seven’s made a disappointing start to the tournament by losing to a strong Ampleforth side. With changes made in both personnel and tactics, the side played some excellent sevens to beat a good Giggleswick side 19-15, with the score flattering the opponents somewhat with them scoring twice in the last minute. Philip Brook created many gaps and Jonathan Taylor scored an excellent try. Joshua Key proved dangerous in open play, but it was turnover ball from Ben Jones’ tackling that created many attacking opportunities.

Against Merchant Taylors’ the side once again controlled proceedings and finished the match victorious 22-7. Bobby Garlington, Ryan Morton and Alex Lo looked positive in attack and with Jonathan Taylor again scoring a brace of tries, the side progressed to a cup quarter final against Barnard Castle.

With early injuries in the match, the side unfortunately made unforced errors and were unable to hold on to their initial lead. The final result of 17-10 was disappointing, but many positives were taken from the tournament, as well as a greater amount of confidence into playing sevens for the team. This can only be positive for the forthcoming three tournaments.
