KGS rugby reports - Jan 27th & 31st

KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS

U15 DAILY MAIL VASE – ROUND 7 – 27 JANUARY 2009

Won 15-0

Played in very difficult conditions, KGS carried out their game-plan with precision.  The back row of Adam Galley, Jack Ingham and Craig Whalley-Hunter were involved in everything, driving KGS forward and defending stoutly.  Ermysteds were a threat throughout especially in their backline, but centre’s Tom Hurst and Nathan White held firm.  Gradually with outside half Will Roper gaining ground with his kicking, the KGS forwards got on top.  From a lineout KGS drove Ermysteds over their line for a fine score (Jack Ingham).  Will Roper added the conversion and shortly afterwards kicked a penalty.  Although Ermysteds responded, KGS maintained the pressure and scored an excellent try from full back Sam Hall after good work from prop Micky Papangelis.  This proved the crucial score and KGS held on to progress into the quarter-finals of the Daily Mail Vase, an away tie at The Leys School in Cambridge.

RUGBY RESULTS V ST ANSELM’S COLLEGE ON SATURDAY 31 JANUARY 2009

U17 XV

Won 40-0

After a pleasing opening fixture losing in a close game to Sedbergh School the U17 (Development XV) travelled to Birkenhead to play St Anselm’s.  Well led by skipper Chris Travis, KGS dominated the game from start to finish.  Matthew Edgar and fellow flanker Bobby Garlington were in good form and created problems for the home team.  Young second row Matthew Ellis showed a great deal of promise, whilst hooker Josh Woods and winger Oliver Chambers were amongst the try scorer’s in a 40-0 victory.

U15XV

Lost 26-17

On a very cold morning KGS started badly after conceding a try in the first minute of the match.  Almost immediately Sam Hall scored a fine individual try from fullback but KGS could not improve the score and squandered lots of possession by trying to move the ball too quickly and not playing through the phases.  The home side scored another try and went in at half time leading by 14-5.  After a strong run from Josh Rowlands on the wing, Sam Hall dropped on the kick through and slid even more over the line. This seemed to motivate the home side and they scored a further two tries after poor defence from KGS.  A late consolation try from Will Fleuriot and conversion from Will Roper did little to lift the dejected KGS spirits.

U14 XV

Won 45-0

A very convincing win and one thoroughly deserved.  The forwards were too strong and the backs too fast for the St Anselm’s players.  However, despite the score the opposition proved determined and did not give up.  The KGS pack are improving each game and look a very well organised and well drilled unit.  Luke Woodward, Charlie Redshaw and Andrew Collins looked particularly impressive.

The backs under the direction of the scrum half Jack Smith, performed superbly, and played fast open rugby.

Tries:  Ben Swift (2), Scott Rudd (2), Ben Rhodes-Powers (2) & Matthew Beaty (1)

Conversions:   Matthew Beaty (5)

U13XV

Won 50-21

The KGS U13 side continued their progress with a dominant performance against St Anselm’s; in fact they were two tries up within five minutes through Adam Coates, who ran strongly for the entire game and Will Lockhart.  St Anselm’s struggled to live with the pace of the game and KGS constantly found holes in their defence.  Thomas Hunter made good ground every time he received the ball culminating in a hat-trick of tries.  Lewis Leach was outstanding throughout both in attack and defence and he deserved his try in the second half.  KGS scored two more tries through Jonathan Chan and James Penrose.  Towards the end KGS took their foot off the pedals and conceded three late tries to make the score line look less convincing.

U12XV

Won 14-5

On a very cold day the team got off to a very slow start and played poorly during the first half.  For the first time this season the forwards were outplayed at the ruck with St Anselm’s turning over a lot of ball. Towards the end of the first half some poor tackling allowed the opposition to take the lead.  The second half performance was much better but St Anselm’s defended stubbornly and KGS only managed to score late into the game.  David King and Connor Wilkinson were excellent throughout and it was fitting that some excellent interplay between the two resulted in a try for Connor.  Scott Collins scored in the last minutes of the game to make sure of victory.  Josh Powell converted both tries.
