KGS rugby reports, 8th November 2008

KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS - SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2008

1st XV v GIGGLESWICK

Won 39-3

Playing for the first time in three weeks, KGS 1ST XV started well against Giggleswick.  The forwards controlled the game in difficult weather conditions.  A number of line-outs near the Giggleswick line allowed KGS to score tries through flanker David Ellis, Captain and No. 8 Jonathan Edwards (2 tries) and prop Kieran Brookes.

Eventually KGS backs came into play and cut large holes in the Giggleswick defence.  Many of these attacks were created by fly-half Daniel Bibby, who also showed good pace in out-sprinting the opposition for a try himself.  KGS finished off Giggleswick with two further tries from Tommy Banks and Callum Bennett (who also added two conversions).

KGS now look forward next Saturday to playing top Welsh school Llandovery College at Ribby Road.

2nd XV v GIGGLESWICK

Won 48-7

Despite the convincing scoreline, this was rather a lacklustre and sleepy performance for this very promising 2nd XV outfit.  KGS dominated both territory and possession but frequently forced the issue too much and pushed passes to floor and slowed the ball down in promising attacking positions.  KGS had the skill and power to keep the ball even then, but too frequently the opportunity to slice open a resilient Giggleswick defence had passed.

In the first half KGS played with the elements on a difficult pitch and scored four tries to one.  Knowing a victory was in safe hands KGS fell into poor habits and squandered many opportunities.  In the second half Giggleswick continued to tackle defiantly whilst KGS remained too flat in attack and frequently lost possession by being too pedestrian.  However KGS progressively got better and the replacements seemed to add impetus to our attacking play.  As the quality got better it allowed more freedom and skilled running with the ball.

Despite a slow start there was a satisfying conclusion with KGS crossing the line nine times.  There were some excellent performances.  James Gardiner looked extremely comfortable at full back in difficult conditions.  Christian Luker stood out as open-side flanker.  Redshaw, Smith, Watson  carried the ball aggressively in attack.  Matthew Edgar displayed is ability as a ball handling centre.

Tries:  Edgar (2), Gyi (2), G Martin (2),  Luker, Chambers & Roper

Jones 6 conversions

U16XV v GIGGLESWICK

Won 61-16

Once again the team struggled to shake out the half term blues in the first half of this match.  After spending large periods camped inside the Giggleswick half, basic errors saw the team only score a Stanley Graham penalty in the first fifteen minutes.  Jonathan Taylor then scored a well worked try and ion half-time Matthew Ellis crashed over to see the team lead 15-0.  After a quiet half-time talk, Giggleswick then faced a KGS side that had a totally different attitude and with the pack dominating, the side scored eight more tries.  The excellent lines of running from the backs led to tries from Josh Keay (2), George Naylor (2), Stanley Graham, Ben Jones, Bobby Garlington and Ryan Morton.  Stanley Graham kicked four conversions.  Once again the try line was not crossed and with James Coulthard, Dexter Eaves, Jake Wilson, Oliver Rowlands and Rob Malings leading the defence, it was of credit to the team that they go into the Bury Grammar School match full of confidence.

U15A XV v GIGGLESWICK

Won 46-0

After a well deserved rest during half-term, the U15s were very rusty against a committed Giggleswick side.  Precious Nwakomah went over the first from a slick backs move.  Jack Walker and Tom Hurst both took advantage of a strong catch and drove from the forwards.  Half-time score 24-0.  KGS started the second half even better than the first.  Tom Hurst scored his hat-trick of tries in the first 15 metres of the second half.  Special mention to Whalley/Hunter for the superb defence.

U14A XV v GIGGLESWICK

Won 56-0

An excellent all round performance with both forwards and backs working together.  The weather conditions at the top of Settle were a little difficult but the KGS backs proved a little too strong against a resilient Giggleswick defence.

Tries:  Ben Rhodes-Powers (4), Luke Woodburn (2), Marcus Mollinga (1), Matt Beatty (1), Ben Swift (1) and Isaac Yeun (1)

Man of the Match: Ben Rhodes-Powers

U13A XV v GIGGLESWICK

Lost 10-5

This was an exciting game played between two evenly matched sides and it was only a momentary lapse in concentration that cost KGS the game.  KGS were under early pressure as the Giggleswick forwards drove powerfully but KGS kept easing the pressure with telling kicks from No. 10 Will Lockhart.  The score at half-time was 0-0 but Giggleswick scored early in the second but a swift reply from KGS levelled it.  From the ensuing kick-off KGS failed to deal with a long kick allowing the home team to dive over.  KGS came back strongly with the back row Tom Hunter, James Penrose and Oliver Bedford outstanding throughout but the Giggleswick defence held leaving KGS disappointed with the result but heartened by a much improved performance.

U12A XV v RIPLEY ST THOMAS on Friday 7 November 2008

Won 61-7
