KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS
Wednesday 19 January v Lymm HS
Quarter final Floodlit Cup at Preston Grasshoppers.
KGS went out of the floodlit cup to a strong Lymm HS team. Lymm opened the scoring in the first five minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the first half. KGS failed to match the physical presence of the Lymm side and utilise the little possession that came their way. The loss of Captain Luke Woodward did not help KGS’s cause.
At half time, KGS were left reeling at a score of 15-0. However, a much more committed approach saw them claw there way back into the game. Good forward play resulted in tries for Collins and a well taken effort by Hargreaves. Lymm pushed ahead with a penalty, which was followed by a goal by Hargreaves. However, time was against KGS and they failed to close the gap. A disappointing result given KGS’s last performance in this competition against Kings Macclesfield.
Saturday 22 January 2011 v Hutton Grammar School
KGS 29 Hutton 5
Kirkham Grammar School 1st XV finished their season with a local derby game against Hutton GS. The game was played at Fylde RUFC due to frozen pitches at both schools. Although Hutton started well and scored the opening try, KGS came straight back and put Hutton under intense pressure. The KGS scrum was very dominant and props John Windle and Jon Evans were in commanding form. After a number of strong catch and drives, it was second row Matthew Ellis who forced his way over to draw the scores level.
KGS continued to force Hutton back with a number of strong runs from back row forwards Bobby Garlington, Phil Cringle and Elliot Crowe. Eventually Hutton cracked again and prop forward Jon Evans was driven over for a try by a number of his pack. As Hutton tried to stop the KGS's forwards more space was appearing out wide and centre and captain Michael Simmonds was also making in roads into the Hutton half. KGS scored another try when full back Stanley Graham finished off with a try in the corner after KGS had forced Hutton to defend for a long period on their own line. KGS kept their discipline in the second half despite having two tries disallowed. Centre Chris Kohler seemed to have scored an exciting team try after linking well with winger Sam Hall but unfortunately lost the ball over the Hutton line.
As Hutton struggled to defend against KGS's forwards spaces seemed to be appearing everywhere and winger Sam Hall was put away to score in the corner with fly half Tom Hurst converting. Winger Hall was on hand again to finish off after captain Michael Simmonds had made a half break. Final score KGS 29 Hutton GS 5.
Many thanks must go to Fylde RUFC who allowed this game to go ahead. This victory completed a very successful season for the KGS 1st XV winning thirteen out of sixteen fixtures and only losing in very close games to England's best school sides.
