KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS
Richard J Wilson Invitational Sevens - 18 March 2010
The KGS U14 7's team competed well in the tournament making it through to the semi finals of the main competition, losing narrowly to St Ambrose 19-10.
KGS lost the first game to the eventual winners Audenshaw 30-0, however, we found our rhythm thereafter, beating KEQMS 25-5, West Hill 35-0 and Sandbach 33-0.
Will Lockhart was the KGS Player of the Tournament, but Harry Mason and Tom Hunter played a major part in the group games and excelled in the semi-final, but a missed tackle in the final seconds cost us a place in the final.
U16’s Lancashire Cup Final - Saturday 20 March 2010
Kirkham GS 3 Merchant Taylors' 13
This was always going to be a difficult match as many of the previous encounters proved. After some excellent performances in previous rounds, the team started off well and made excellent breaks through Fraser Burnie and Sam Hall. Mickey Papangelis and Jack Ingham controlled proceeding up front and with the driving game working well; it was not long before a kickable penalty was awarded. William Roper slotted the goal and KGS seemed to be in control. With Sam Hall caught on the line and Harrison Moulding and Rhys Williams stopped after excellent breaks, it was disappointing that KGS turned around only 3-0 up.
The second half was a total opposite of the controlling first half. The team seemed to panic on the ball and mistakes started to creep into play. Basic errors in passing, kicking and tackling started to appear and pressure put on ourselves led to Merchant's starting to camp in our territory. After leveling up the scores and entering the final ten minutes unfortunate errors led to Merchant's scoring two tries.
This was a disappointing way to finish the season, not because of the result only, but because the team did not achieve an award that would have been a reflection on all their efforts this year. With excellent parental support in this match and throughout the season, it was unfortunate that the team finished on the losing side in this very close encounter. An excellent effort.
U14 Lancashire Plate Final - Sunday 21 March 2010
The U14s met Stonyhurst in an exciting final of the plate on Sunday having defeated local rivals Arnold to reach the final, they gained an half time lead through tries by Thomas Hunter and Lewis Leach. Unfortunately insufficient use was made of a favourable wind and after half time the Stonyhurst side learnt by KGS's mistake and was able to score the tries they needed to secure victory in a thoroughly entertaining game.
U13 County Cup Final - Sunday 21 March 2010
The U13's met a very athletic team from Morecambe High School. Against much bigger opponents the KGS side dominated possession for long periods but was unable to cope with strong running from the Morecambe flanker and full back. A try in the opening minute and three further tries gave Morecambe an unassailable lead but the KGS side continued to battle and was rewarded with a try by Connor Wilkinson. All in all although the boys were disappointed they can take great credit for a determined performance against physically much bigger opponents.
Headmaster, Douglas Walker said "We were very proud to have three representatives at Lancashire Cup Finals at Rochdale on Sunday and although each team ended up as runners up in their competition it was a significant achievement for both staff and boys to fight their way through to this level. It was also wonderful to see the number of parents attending and supporting on such an exciting day".
