KGS reports w/e 14th November 2009

KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS - SATURDAY 14 DECEMBER

2009

U15A XV

Won 17-3        Daily Mail Vase

The U15A's played Hutton Grammar in Round 3 of the Daily Mail Vase on Tuesday 10 November.

In the first half the forwards dominated the scrum, allowing the backs plenty of possession.  The first try came from an organized catch and drove on the line-out and scrum half Jack Smith spotted a gap and darted over the try line.

The second half saw Hutton kicking a penalty just after kick-off and getting them back in the game.  For the rest of the game both sides created plenty of chances but were unable to score.  A fine back-row move in the final five minutes enabled Smith to score his second try of the game and seal the victory for KGS.

U15B XV v Bury Grammar School (A)

Lost    Bury A 42                   KGS B 12

The U15B team played Bury Grammar School U15A team away on Saturday putting up a solid performance for most of the match.  In the first half KGS held out for the first 15 minutes but the Bury A team had a few strong runners who started to use the ball well and scored a couple of tries.  At the start of the second half KGS played their best rugby and were rewarded with two tries, an individual sprint for the line from the winger Brian Liu and then a well worked try from the second row Tommy Baybutt after concerted pressure from the forwards.  KGS defended heroically until the end but lost to a strong A team.  However, their attitude has to be commended and they never gave up working all morning.

U13B XV v Bury Grammar School

Won 26-14

KGS gave an excellent performance to win their first game of the year.  It was also pleasing that a total of  twenty three players played in the match.

KGS dominated passes in and territory from the start of the game.  A long period of pressure earned KGS the first try of the game through Jack Welch which he converted.  A small lapse in concentration allowed Bury in to equalise.  Jake Cardwell then used his pace to score an excellent individual try which was converted by Jack Welch.

At half time several replacements were made but the team continued with the same dominance.  Unfortunately a strong counter attack by Bury allowed them to equalise. The game was poised at 14-14.  Fortunately the impressive Jake Cardwell added another unconverted try.  This was followed by a try by Jamie Baldwin.  Perhaps the most impressive try of the game.

In summary it was a very strong performance from KGS.  The team was well captained by Jack Baxter-Beard, Sam Sisson, Elliot Evans, Harry Welch and Henry Joiner played very well in the forwards.  Jack Welch, Oscar Graham, Mat Carroll, George Shuttleworth-Brown and Jack Baxter-Beard did very well in the backs.  The whole squad played well but they must continue to train hard to earn more victories.

Andrew Kyriacou (left school 2001)

Former KGS pupil Andrew Kyriacou, now playing for Ulster, was selected for Ireland A last weekend to play against Tonga.

Andrew played for England Schools U18 (2001) whilst at KGS and went on to play for premiership sides Sale and Saracens before joining Ulster.
