KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL RUGBY RESULTS W/C 8 DECEMBER 2008
U16 XVLANCASHIRE CUP QUARTER FINAL – SATURDAY 13 DECEMBER 2008
KGS 23          St Edward’s College
On a wet day, with a depleted side, the U16s won this game with the final play of the game. For a large proportion of the first half KGS were camped in the St Edward’s half and with one minute to go found themselves 8-0 up through a penalty by Ben Jones and a mauled try from Alex Lo. However, St Edward’s pulled a try back through their winger and the half time score looked much closer at 8-7.
St Edward’s pressurised after half time and was rewarded through a well worked try.
KGS replied straight away through some excellent mauling led by Matthew Ellis, Adam Whalley and debutant flanker, Jonathan Taylor. Through one of these mauls, Ryan Morton cashed over for a try. Ben Jones missed the conversion but converted a penalty to make the score 16-12 with five minutes left.
Basic errors by the team with two minutes left saw St Edward’s convert their pressure into what looked like a match winning score and in order to win the game, the ball had to be kicked dead from the KGS kick off. However from the kick off a superb follow up from the KGS forwards saw the St Edward’s player turned over and KGS attacked through the whole team. After a number of phases of play James Coulthard fed Ryan Morton who crashed over for a match winning try and a New Year semi final against either Manchester Grammar School or Lancaster Grammar School.
DAILY MAIL VASE COMPETITION – THURSDAY 11 DECEMBER 2008
U15 XV
KGS 35Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Cowley 14
The U15s travelled to Cowley Long College on Thursday to play the fourth round of the Daily Mail Vase Competition.
The forwards were tremendous right from the whistle. The catch and drive from the line-out was particularly effective. The back row dominated the open play which allowed Sam Hall to cross the line twice in the first half.
The second half saw Cowley coming back with waves and waves of strong runs from the half backs. However KGS continued to defend hard and kept Cowley out until the last quarter.
KGS will face Calday Grange Grammar School in the next round.
