WINNERS OF THE BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL SEVENS – Wednesday 4 March 2009
KGS 1st VII entered the Birkenhead School Sevens, a tournament they had lost in the final last season. KGS breezed through their group’s games against Adams Grammar School (38-5), Merchant Taylors’ (40-0), Arnold (61-0) and Caldy Grange (40-5).
KGS then faced St Ambrose School in the quarter final and completely dominated the game with powerful displays from Captain Jonathan Edwards and Kieran Brookes and silky running from James Moncrieff and again KGS won 40-5.
The semi-final against Stonyhurst College was a difficult game, with KGS rushing into an early lead with Stonyhurst fighting back, however, late on KGS regained control with Daniel Bibby and Kieran Marmion sprinting clear to finish the game with KGS winning 31-14. This set up a repeat of last year’s final against Sedbergh School.
KGS responded to the pressure of the final with outstanding displays from Jonathan Edwards and Tommy Banks. At half-time KGS had gained a 17-5 lead, but Sedbergh came back and with a minute left on the clock drew equal (17-17). Very late on KGS’s defence turned Sedbergh over, and Tommy Banks sprinted the length of the field to gain KGS an outstanding victory 22-17, the first time they have won this title since 2000, when England player Richard Wigglesworth was in the side.

Kirkham Grammar School runners up in the 2nd VII Austin Friars St Monica’s Tournament – 4 March 2009
KGS 2nd VII travelled to Carlisle to take part in this tournament containing ten teams, all of which were first sevens apart from KGS.
In extremely poor conditions the competition went ahead and progressed as the snow and hail came in throughout the afternoon.
In the group matches KGS narrowly defeated Dame Allen’s 12-7, lost to Ullswater School 5-17 but then played well against St Bees to win 20-5 and then Ermystead’s 10-7.
As a result KGS won the group and so progressed to the final where they played the hosts Austin Friars who topped their group.
On a white pitch, Austin Friars proved too strong for the KGS team and lost 7-24. Nevertheless the KGS team should be very proud of their achievement to be runners up.
Squad:Â Sanders, Stover, Luker, Hesketh, Spedding, Morecombe, Roper, Bennett, Hamilton and Chambers.
