KEQMS v Rossall Reports

1st XV

The words of the coach when leaving the changing rooms where I want a win I don’t care about the performance or the score. Therefore the end result was pleasing. Against a side that had beaten us two years ago, on a morning where fog and greasy condition made playing difficult a forty point victory was what the doctor ordered. Funnily enough we went behind first when Rossall slotted a penalty. Up until it had been all us but we were just a little rushed in our finishing. The fact that we did not let it panic us meant that we were happy to run the ball still. Good handling going left saw wing Olly Johnson get held up just short, from the recycled ball the forwards drove well but it was scrum half Will Rees with a clever snipe who scored the try. Grant Blackshaw converted well. This relaxed the whole side and from good defence Rees picked up a loose ball and distributed well. The backs again handled fluently and skipper Harry Ormsby used his pace and balance well to claim the score.

The next score was again by Rees who from a well worked back row move saw the gap and went through it. The forwards then had their turn; good recycling and lineout work saw them driving close to. Keeping the ball alive saw more and more ground being made and the eventual score by number 8 Dale Martin. The final try of the half came from more good work from backs and forwards alike. When the overlap behind was eventually created flanker Luke Skyrme popped up in the backs to use his pace and strength well to score. Blackshaw added the 2. Half Time 29 – 3.

With changes being made in personnel the disruption didn’t seem to effect the patterns of the home side. Unfortunately the referee decided to penalise the home side off the park for the rest of the half. It was to their credit that the KEQMS kept their discipline. This they did and from a good catch and drive the maul was stopped just short of the line, the ball however went wide to the backs and good handling saw the ball go inside to the supporting Ben Holland to score.

Scrum Half Will Rees crowned a fine individual performance by his hat-trick try from close to Blackshaw converted.
The final Lytham score of the day went to the captain. From more good lineout ball Blackshaw who had moved back to 10 ran a fine move floating a super pass to Ormsby who used his quick feet to beat two men and score. Blackshaw converted.

Rossall were rewarded for their brave efforts with the final score which came from a scrum close to the Lytham line.  Full Time 48 – 8.

2ndXV

We started very strongly scoring within the first 5 minutes threw winger Josh McLaren. Off the next restart Rob Taylor took a good catch and ran most of the pitch before drawing the fullback and putting Max Sworder in for the 2nd try. Then as the game progress more  dominant play by the forwards presented the talented young backline with lots of possession to run wild. Some strong runs by centres Max Sworder and Alasdair Killgallon saw us go further and further into the Rossall half. Our lineout was working fantastically winning all of our own ball and opposition’s ball. Winger David Auty added two more tries to his tally for this season. And within 20 minutes off the first half Max added two more to complete a fine hat trick before making way for Stuart Kilner. Some good tactical kicking by Tom Richardson saw Stuart Kilner run onto a high ball and score his first try of senior rugby in the corner. Minutes later Kilner ran in from the half way line using his strength and pace to beat the Rossall Fullback and score under the posts, Sandy Tonge added the two points as well. Half time arrived with us comfortably winning 53-0. At half time all the subs were brought on this saw James Robinson and Peter Mackay make there 2nd team debuts. Yet again we saw lots of possession and won almost everything however we found it more difficult to put the finishing touches on with a few dropped catches and forward passes. However this didn’t stop Tom Pemberton crossing the line and a few minutes later Matt Goupil crossing the line off a good back row move of the base of the scrum. With the game coming to a close quick ball by the forwards saw a good backs move put James Robinson in for a try on his debut in the corner. The game ended 68-0.

U14

We started off strongly by receiving are own kick, and through some impressive close passing the forwards had marched the ball deep into the Rossall 22. We then spun the ball out to the backs where Ben Taylor sprinted for the line; due to his pace we scored the first try of the game. Then the next try came from Thompson who, after receiving a popped ball out of the bottom of a ruck, ran down the wing and scored. Rossall immediately responded with a good try of their own. However their fight back was short lived as Thompson scored almost immediately from a number 8 pick up where he ran wide stepping the defence and scored under the posts. Teddy Diggle then scored after a powerful run. Richard, Matthew, Will Blundell and Matt Cartmell drove the ball over the line with Matthew scoring in the end. After this they scored for the second time after their fly half breaking away. This was the last score of the first half. This left the first half score 29- 12 to us. In the second half they failed to score again. We went to score 4 more times with Matt Cartmell scoring twice more and Frazer Maclaren finished off a brilliant solo effort with a powerful run from his own 5 meter line. This left the full time score at 55-12. This was are first win of the season. It lifted are confidence amazingly. We are ready for another win next week. Well-done team.

Merchant Taylor Reports

1st XV

After a first half where we were outstanding at times, with the lineout work superb and two excellent tries the second half, with regard to the performance, was very disappointing. Against a buoyant side that were on a 6 game winning streak, who looked pacey and comfortable with ball in hand, it is to our credit that we had played so well to turn around at half time in the lead. During this half our lineout work had given us so many opportunities, Peter Erskine was accurate in his throwing and his confidence grew so that even the harder throws were being hit. On the floor the forwards work was awesome, time after time the ball was either turned over or Merchants were penalised for holding on. As usual flankers Luke Skyrme and Ben Samuels were to the fore but they were backed up by others as well. As a result the good first phase work of the pacey Merchant backs came to nothing.

It was a sharp drop goal by Merchants that opened the scoring. The reply from Lytham was immediate. A good lineout drive close to the Merchants line was held up, from the scrum a move saw the ball recycled and good handling to outside centre Harry Ormsby saw him beat his man on the outside pass out of contact to the linking Kenji King. He drew the last man well putting right wing Oliver Johnson in space and he finished well.

Merchant Taylors hit back quickly, some good handling saw the full back coming into the line and some shaky defence so him coast in easily. Fortunately Lytham did not let this effect their attacking play and from yet another superbly executed lineout the ball was won at the back given down to the peeling second row Ben Holland who showed a fine turn of pace to beat his defender and outpace the cover. Fly half Grant Blackshaw added the two with a fine conversion. Half Time 12 – 8.

Unfortunately with regards to attack this is really where the game ended for Lytham. For the majority of the second half we defended. This we did magnificently at times with tackle after tackle being made during phases that often lasted several minutes. Around the loose the forwards were dogged in defence as were the backs when the ball went wide. Any ball that we won for some reason we used poorly. Poor kicking down the middle of the field saw Merchants either profit by running it back or by kicking it deeper into our half. Fielding the kick we were slow and indecisive often running up blind alleys and being turned over.

When we did run the ball we did individually and off the cuff it seemed and yet again often in contact we were turned over. As time went by it looked like we had weathered the storm. After 20 plus minutes of tackling a great piece of individual skill by Blackshaw saw him beat the first line of defence and one on one with the full back kick well to chase. Winning the ball back the attack continued but yet again we rushed and did things individually as a result we made their defence easy. Turning over the ball deep in their own half they countered and with a 3 on two created finished well against yet again some disappointing defence. This try added to an earlier penalty and the conversion saw Lytham chasing the game with time running out. Unfortunately the disappointing second half play continued and a comedy of errors at a free kick saw the ball knocked on and from the resulting scrum the Merchants scrum half put the result out of sight. Full Time 12 – 23.

2nd XV

We game into this game full of confidence as we were on a 5 match winning streak but we knew that this game would probably be are biggest test yet.

From the word go we started very strong with some great rucking by the forwards giving the backs plenty of quick ball which they used to great affect with some strong runs by Alasdair Killgallon and Josh Maclaren. It wasn’t long before a well worked backs move saw Josh Maclaren move in for the opening try under the posts. Unfortunately after this we became quite sloppy and a series of missed tackles saw them reply. However for the rest of the first half we looked in control but couldn’t finish off our moves, this wasn’t helped by two disallowed tries either. We ended the first half knowing that we were dominant and that we should be in the lead even though the scores were level at 7-7.

Straight off kick off in the second half we secured ball and looked like we were going to score at any time. After 5 minutes of possession a great dummy by scrum half Will Rees saw him open up the merchants defence and he drew the full back and great support play by Tom Pemberton awarded him with a try. But we knew this wasn’t enough and some good kicking by Pearse saw us deep into their half and our lineouts were going fantastically. Under all the pressure the merchants defence were giving us penalty after penalty and after a good kick we had a lineout on their 5 metre line.

The lineout worked perfectly and we simply drove the maul over the line and Pemberton put the ball down for his second of the day. More dominant play throughout the half allowed our backs to run with the ball and I can’t remember a time when were in our own half. Will kept making good yards with ball in hand and a deceiving dummy of a lineout fooled all of the merchant’s forwards and he ran in for a simple try. The game finished 24-7 to us. The second half was probably the best rugby we have played all season and we will need to carry it into next week with a tough game against Rossall.
