KEQMS reports w/e 23rd January

Heavy defeats inflicted on Bury

After a lengthy break due to Christmas and the bad weather, a "rusty" performance may well have been expected but the King Edward & Queen Mary rugby teams in their fixtures against Bury Grammar School, but they all produced well-oiled performances and some convincing wins.

The 1st XV led the way in an outstanding game scoring ten tries in their 62-5 win. North scrum half Tom Webb was in fine form scoring a hat-trick of tries but this was a complete team performance with the forwards providing a strong platform and good fast ball for the backs to work with. Inside Centre Tom Richardson opened the scoring showing strength and speed, hitting a great line. Full Back Sandy Tonge broke the defence and showed a good turn of pace to score the second. Wing Alex Grindrod scored in the corner before Rob Taylor swooped to pick up, and then beat several players to score the fourth of the half.

The final try of the half was from a great steal by the pack; turning the ball over at a maul to feed Scrum Half Tom Webb who showed good speed of thought to score his first try of the game.

With the forwards dominating play and the Front Row of Elliott Bowen, Peter Erskine and Nick Carrdus to the fore, the second half saw tries from Charlie Cook, Pearse Carson and Peter Erskine as KEQMS dominated the game.

The U15 team enjoyed a convincing win over Bury GS 41-7.  KEQMS controlled the game form the very first whistle with strong running and great angles to get over the Bury defensive line.

William Blundell contributed massively, not only with his three tries but his ball carrying skill.  Excellent performances from Richard Grocott, Henry Hargreaves and captain Matthew McGlaughlin, who's defensive qualities where fantastic.  The team enjoyed plenty of the ball and showed patience and determination to ensure a well deserved victory.

In the U13 team six players scored tries, three in the forwards and three in the backs.

Sam Lavelle led from the front scoring three. Cameron McKenzie, James Rowley, Mitchell Myers, Blake Wilkinson and Myles Dunlop all scored one each.

The running, handling and off-loading were very impressive. The team were rightly proud of an excellent win and it would be difficult to pick a man of the match, however, the accolade goes to Kieran Kelly who was outstanding in the back row. Final score 46-10.

The U12 team had a flying start with their best performance of the season. The outstanding first half saw exceptional runs from Josh Clayton and Jamie Broadbent. The first try came from the team’s captain, Joe Barrow, who sniped round a ruck from close range. This was immediately followed by a powerful and tenacious run from Matthew Warsnip to score a try. Sustained pressure from King Edward’s saw a further try by Josh Hothersall.

In the second half, Bury attacked from the whistle and scored, but King Edward’s got back in to the game with a second try for Matthew Worsnip to finish the game 20-5 to the home side. There were also outstanding performances from Sam Fisher and James Lou, but man of the match goes to Luke Gill.
