St Mary’s Reports
1stXV
This was the first game for over 5 weeks for the 1st XV and with little or no training being able due to examinations the outcome was excellent. Playing in difficult conditions with a strong wind and low sun scoring 7 tries and making numerous other chances was no mean feat. Lytham didn’t take long to claim their first try in the game with superb handling in the conditions saw fly half Pearse Carson find inside centre Kelham O’ Hanlon running wide and a good angle from full back Grant Blackshaw saw him coast in. He added the extra 2 to add to his first minute penalty. St Mary’s then showed their metal with some good forward play gaining them good yards and a good break from the fly half made the Lytham defence scramble. From the resulting phase the Lytham back line strayed offside and they reduced the gap to 7. This made Lytham realise that they weren’t going to have it all their own way.
Poor kicking from the away side saw Blackshaw with the ball in space and he beat a man setting skipper Harry Ormsby free. He drew the last man well and put right wing Oliver Johnson (celebrating his acceptance to Oxford University) in at the corner.
Again the score saw the away side raise their game up front and with a solid lineout they continued to win a fair share of ball. Solid defence however kept them at bay with, as we have come to expect, the Lytham back row to the fore. Yet again Ben Samuels, Dale Martin and Luke Skyrme proved a thorn in the opposition side on the floor. Skyrme showed his worth in attack however being found by scrum half Will Rees he made huge yards showing outstanding strength which was to more to the fore in the second half. From a scrum in the St Mary’s 22 number 8 Martin broke finding Rees who passed well to put Carson in space who showed good strength to score.
More chances were created by some good back play, the passing and lines of run created huge amounts of space but some poor finishing saw passes going to floor or the wide players being shepherded to the touchline. H.T. 20 – 3.
With the elements now in their faces Lytham were still not home and dry. However a good first few minutes saw Lytham dominate straight from the whistle. Better handling saw wing Ross Collins put in space by Ormsby and he used his strength well to score.
The next try came from an outstanding back row move seeing Skyrme use his strength to go through the gap, he used his pace to beat the next line of defence and when eventually tackled recycled to Ormsby who scored well.
With his flanker partner wreaking havoc in the St Mary’s defence Samuels decided to get into the act. This he did superbly scoring a brace of tries. One was from a quick tap and the second from a group drive. Blackshaw finally had easy shot into the wind to collect the final two. F.T. 42 – 3.
U12
The under 12 rugby team performed extremely well on Saturday against a strong St Mary’s side. Early pressure from the away side tested the KEQMS defence, which stood strong and this enabled a counter attack lead by Sam Lavell. This early score calmed the nerves of the KEQMS side as they have not played for nearly 6 weeks.
Excellent work from the forwards lead by Hay, Lanigan, Razello and Myers, ensured good ball for David Maddox to set the backs free into space to run at the St Mary’s defence.  KEQMS dominance both at set plays and open play, secured a vital victory, this is testament to the hard work they have put into this season.
Well done everyone!!
