Stockport Reports

1stXV

This was another fine performance to back up the one produced on Wednesday. Against a strong opposition we battled well and overcame difficult times in both halves to come out on top 3 tries to 2. We started superbly scoring a fine try off some clinical handling play. The ball was recycled several times in the loose and a strong outside break by skipper Harry Ormsby saw him fend off tacklers well and then draw the final opponent to set free debutant right wing Max Sworder who finished well. Outside half Grant Blackshaw converted superbly from the touchline. This great start was continued by the three quarters with inside centre Kelham O’ Hanlon creating space for both partners Ormsby and full back Kenji King with well timed and delayed passes. Unfortunately neither of these chances was finished and when fly half Blackshaw used his fast feet to beat two opponents, but again failed to finish, the home side wondered if they would rue these missed chances.

With Stockport starting to enjoy more of the play our forwards found themselves under extreme pressure both at scrums and line-outs. The inexperienced front row combination were given a torrid time by their opposite numbers and as the supply of line-out ball began to dry up the pressure started to tell. After a simple penalty a mistake behind saw the first try conceded and when from the kick off the Stockport backs ran riot to score a length of the field movement the great start seemed to be all for nothing. With the pressure from the Stockport 8 continuing we dug in well to survive until half time without another score. H.T. 7 – 13.

After the break we put into action a plan to get the first hit in strongly at the scrums and this worked well, along with this the line-out started to function again with Right Wing come Second Row Dale Martin providing a stream of excellent ball through some athletic jumping. On top of this the back row started to dominate the break down area turning over ball after ball. As a result we took command of the second half. Simple penalty exchanges started the scoring and a great forward driving saw individuals on our side making good ground. With the play seeming to have come to a standstill blindside flanker Luke Skyrme showed outstanding strength to cover the final yards to the line and plunge over. Blackshaw added yet another simple kick. Nick Carrdus, Sam Callaghan and Elliott Bowen continued to work like Trojans against their larger opponents and as a result we were able to gain more and more ball and also territory. Two classic snipes from scrum half Tom Webb saw the second result in a try, he broke the first line of defence and went around the final opponent to score the decisive try. With the score going unconverted the last 15miutes were nail biting but we managed to hang on to secure a well fought victory. F.T. 22 – 16.

2 nds vs Stockport

We started strong with some quick ball as a result from powerful rucking by the forwards with the backs gradually progressing up the field. Unfortunately some scrappy play lead two a few miss tackles and the stockport fullback was left with a one on one with sandy, who made a great tackle but with no defensive support the ball was offloaded and stockport took the early lead. We immediately struck back with a couple of good line outs and we found ourselves with a scrum on the opposition 5 metre line number 8  Tom Pemberton showed great strength of the base of the scrum to open up our scoring. We carried on with some strong play but unfortunately could not convert the possession and at half time we were down 5-7. With a disastrous first five minutes of the second half we conceded again. Yet again we came back with some good play and as our backs were just starting to link up inside centre Alasdair Kilgallen went down injured and had to be airlifted of the pitch luckily he is fine now. With fifteen minutes of the game left we produced some fantastic rugby which lead to Tom Pemberton crossing the line again. With only a few minutes left on the clock we had a penalty on the ten metre line unfortunately Pearse Carson couldn’t convert. The final score was 12-10 to Stockport the second consecutive game that we have lost by two points. However it was a strong team performance and if we play like this on Saturday I am sure we will get a win.

U15

KEQMS U15’s produced another outstanding team display to remain unbeaten so far this season with 5 wins. Stockport has won their previous 4 games and the Lytham boys knew they were up for their hardest game of the season so far. Before the game the away side looked sluggish as straight from the kick off Stockport won the ball and their first attack resulted in an attacking scrum on the King Edwards 5m line. From the resulting scrum Stockpot's Number 8 walked straight though the King Edwards defence and scored an un-converted try. This sluggish display of rugby continued until around the tenth minute when good hands from the backs resulted in a fantastic un-converted try by Tom Higham for to level the score at 5-5. This gave the KEQMS boys the spark they needed and from then on began to dominate the game. Stockport with their huge forwards couldn't break through the KEQMS defence for the remainder of the half. Soon after Toms try Emilio Arciniega scored a solo effort from ball tuned over by Will Sheridan with a zigzagging run avoiding 5 Stockport defenders. The try was un-converted. Stockport had a very talented inside-centre but KEQMS 10 & 12 Combination managed to keep him under raps and ¾ of the way into the first half and Ralph Dowds KEQMS Inside-centre with some fancy footwork walked straight past his opposite number to run away for the for try of the match. The score was converted and KEQMS lead 17-5. Stockport couldn't get into the game and again great finishing by KEQMS winger Tom Higham saw him score his second try of the match, the score was un-converted. With the last play of the half a fantastic move from the away side’s backs resulted in Ralph Dowds running from his own half to score under the posts. The try was converted to leave the half time score 31-5.

The second half kicked off and KEQMS still dominated the game but a missed tackle in the forwards and a miss communication by KEQMS 10 & 12 that saw Stockport’s talented No 8 and 12 score two soft tries at the start off the 2nd half.   However Connor Miles soon scored a great blindside try to make the score 36-12.  KEQMS played some of their best rugby so far this season in this game but on at least three occasions late in the game they carried the ball that one yard to far, when a simple pass would have resulted in an easy try for a teammate and would have the left the score more realist to the match the performance..  Lancaster Grammar visit Lytham on Thursday afternoon (3pm kick-off) in what should be a mouth watering Daily Mail Cup match with the winner travelling to Arnold in the next round.

U14

The score on Saturday did not reflect the spirit that we played with, and are courage. As we were missing many players we still carried on trying to make some tackles and to gain yards to score. We came close to scoring many time with Teddy Diggle and by myself this gained us many yards but with the difference between strength in are team and there team. The lack of experience on the wings allowed them to make a few strong runs. Overall it was a good spirited game, and we will come back fighting strong next week.

Wednesday 24th September vs Winstanley College (Daily Mail U18 Rd1)

1stXV Won 53 – 0

Tries: Ormsby (3), Collins (2), Webb (2), Pemberton, Barker

Con: O’Hanlon (3), Blackshaw

This was an excellent display of running rugby in beautiful conditions. We never let them into the match from the very start. The forwards matched their opposite number for power and certainly were far ahead when it came to fitness. After a little hitch in the first couple of scrums we settled and eventually got on top. We were far superior in the loose and at the lineout. We struggled slightly with our catch and drive but that was the only real weakness in a fine forward display. The dominance did not alter as the changes were made later in the game which bodes well for later in the season if more injuries occur.

The game was won, however, by the display behind the scrum by a set of backs that made their rugby league counterparts look leaden footed. The angles of run from centres Kelham O’Hanlon and Harry Ormsby were a joy to watch matched by the excellent distribution of half backs Tom Webb (who scored 2 sniping tries) and Grant Blackshaw ( and later in the game Pearce Carson). The finishing of left wing Ross Collins was both pacey and strong.

We scored 4 tries in the first half with the pick a length of the field movement that started from the kick off with the ball finding full back Kenji King who broke well and linked with Ormsby from a resulting ruck the ball went to the narrow side and a good final pass saw Collins score his first of 2.

In the second half we scored 5 tries most from deep in our own half. A good inside pass from Blackshaw at 9 saw second row Lewis Williams show a fine turn of pace to gallop 40 yards before drawing the last man and passing to flanker Tom Pemberton, making his debut off the bench, who had worked hard in support to claim the try.

Skipper Ormsby had an outstanding performance scoring a hat-trick using his speed, strength and intelligent picking of angles to dazzle the appreciative crowd.

Tuesday 23rd September vs. Merchant Taylors

U15 Won 23 – 15

Tries: Dowds, Higham (2)

Con: Arciniega

Pen: Arciniega (2)

King Edwards knew against a strong Merchants team who had easily beaten Stonyhurst by 30 points the previous weekend.  The game kicked off and King Edwards looked on the front foot, rucking supremely. Poor hands from the backs denied the home side many chances, Merchants hit back with the quick centre who side stepped most of the King Edwards team to score out wide, poor tackling was the culprit. The conversion was missed. The home side hit back straight away when the forwards won a good penalty in front of the post which Emilio Arciniega slotted, to close the gap to two points. Merchants again scored an unconverted try due to poor tackling and began to take over the half. KEQMS scored a great try through winger Tom Higham and a penalty in the last minute to leave the score 11 – 15 at half time.

The second half was all King Edwards with tries coming from Ralph Dowds (unconverted) & Tom Higham out wide which was converted to put the game out of site from the away team. A Great 23-15 wins from the home side that were not their best but still won against a very good Merchant Taylor team. KEQMS are unbeaten this season so far.

Reports

1stXV

The day started badly and this theme continued throughout. With the bus arriving half an hour late and then getting dreadfully lost on the way, the preparations for the game to begin with were awful. The kick off was delayed but the warm up period of 20 minutes certainly wasn’t long enough. With a re-organised side due to illness and injury the problems got worse when prop Chris Taylor had to leave the field after 2 minutes with a recurrence of his rib injury.

We started well enough defending superbly against a very talented backline but couldn’t win enough consistent ball to pose our own threat. The first two tries we conceded were from bad luck one where a brave fall from full back Kenji King saw the follow up player dangerously fly hack close to his head and then win the race to the line when it seemed to all that the ball was to go out of play. The second was strangely similar with the kick on seeing the ball bounce favourably for the Giggleswick follow up player. At this point Lytham found theirselves down to 14 when Ben Holland had to leave the field with blood streaming from his nose.

The third Giggleswick try of the half was down to our own poor play with several tackles being missed close to, all of which were makeable. At this point the day got even worse when number 8 David Johnson collapsed in open play after a knock on his head in a previous ruck. After urgent attention from the first aid staff he finally came around but could take no further part in the game. At this point we had a decision to make dig in and give it a try or take a backward step and let their sprightly backline destroy us. HT 17 – 0.

We certainly rose to the challenge second half defending doggedly and giving 100%. We made it difficult for their backline to break through and as we started getting more confident we started to also string moves together in attack. We did concede another score early on, when their inside centre got outside not one but three of our defenders and set up another soft try. This didn’t stop the effort however, the lineout and scrums suddenly started to operate and the backs were able to try their own ploys behind. Strong runs from centre Kelham O’ Hanlon and wing Dale Martin should have lead to scores but the support players were just not close enough. Another superb backs move saw outside centre Harry Ormsby in space and an outstanding angle from wing Oliver Johnson again on any other day would have seen a score but superb defence from Giggleswick snuffed out another chance. Unfortunately a bad tempered end to the game saw one player from both side injured through foul play. Full Time 22 – 0.

U14

1st half

After winning the toss we decide to receive the ball. After a good kick and catch, we took the ball straight into contact on the 10meter line. After a quick ruck and pass out to the backs and getting it down the line to the outside centre where a ruck was formed where the ball was turned over. Then due to a disorganised back line Giggleswick managed to find a gap and score. After a good restart by Ben Saunders the forwards ran up to close down the man, but too late as he had all ready got it out to the backs. And they had regained yards to the half way line then a good tackle by Chris Kelly and after a good hold up on the half way line for a couple of minutes they managed to break through once again an produce another try. Then they scored a successful conversion. The half time score was 17-0 to them.

In the second half a few substitutions were made. In the first few minutes of the second half fitness prevailed when after turning over the ball in a scrum Frazer got the ball and spotted a gap and ten scored. Ben then converted the try. Then mutes after again at their 5meter line after a good defence by Henry Hargreaves and the forwards they were pushed back to their 5meter line where we turned over the ball and then knocked it on. They then scored a breakaway try with their winger breaking two tackle then he ended up scoring under the post, the following kick was converted.  5 minutes later Thompson scored again after he picked it up off the back of a ruck on their 22. This kick was once again converted the score was now 24 – 19. This was to be are final try of the half. They then went on to score another breakaway try to leave the finale score of 27 – 19.

1stXV

It was pleasing that we returned to our winning ways this week against a side who although weakened by unavailability were very competitive, especially upfront in the first half.

This week we started very slowly with the forwards winning lots of good first phase ball but then quickly turning it back over by players going in to contact and being held up. The whole side seemed very tense trying desperately to get in control of the game but only succeeding in putting itself under pressure by errors. The game was in its second quarter before we managed to break their resolve and score the first of our 7 tries.

Bury used a similar defensive pattern to us and we did eventually break it down very well with some intelligent play. Although we score 7 good tries we should have scored far more. In the last 4 minutes of the game we blew 4 chances all of which were well worked by some excellent handling right up until the last pass. On each occasion the ball failed to find the receiver which is something we need to work very hard on to get right as in closer games these could be the only chances we get.

Our first phase play was good, we again scrummaged very well winning and going forward on our own ball and doing the same on a lot of theirs. Debutant hooker Sam Callaghan stole quite a number of their put ins looked after outstandingly by props Chris Taylor and Nick Cardus. We didn’t really use this huge supply of ball very well at times only doing the odd back row move and even then with little conviction. We have an outstanding array of back row forwards who are dominating the defensive battle at the moment and I hope to see the same happening in attack in the next few games.  The lineout was improved from last week, the lifters did as they were asked and kept the jumper in the air for longer helping Callaghan with his throw and as a result we won a large part of both our and their ball. The drive from the clean catch was sloppy at times with players seeming unsure of their roles this is again another area that needs improving asap.

Behind the scrum the contribution was good with most of the tries set up or scored by slick handling and speed of thought. Centres Kelham O’Hanlon and Harry Ormsby ran riot at times with some excellent lines of run set up well by fly half Grant Blackshaw. Wing Oliver Johnson worked very hard both when he had the ball and when he was supporting it. Dale Martin on the right, in only his second game saw more action in attack also. Playing out of position he must just try to play his natural forwards game but hopefully in a little more space. Early on in the game when we were under pressure and the backs were seeing little ball we did continue to run the same move time and again. Although it was a correct move to stop their defensive pattern poor handling saw the ball being spilt more often than not. The first score came through us using a deft kick behind the rushing defence which is something that we should have been doing far earlier I feel. Saying all of this however we did score 3 good tries in the first half the second and third from accurate handling and then great running angles from Ormsby. Half Time 21 -0.

We started slowly in the second half but in the last quarter ran away with the game scoring another 4 tries. O’ Hanlon bagged a brace with some excellent short angles and stepping off delayed ball from Blackshaw. Flanker Luke Skyrme claimed a deserved try for the back row using his pace well in support.

The one incident that really put a dampener on the whole game came in the scoring of the fourth try when Number 8 Alex McWilliam-Grey dislocated his shoulder as he dived and placed the ball over the line. We all hope he has a speedy recovery and hope he is back to full fitness before the end of the season. He will certainly be a loss to the side.

6 out of the 7 tries scored were converted by Blackshaw who continues to kick well from the floor. 8 out of 9 for the season so far we all hope that this sort of return can be maintained.

Full Time 47 – 0.

U15’s

King Edwards U15s squad travelled to Bury on Saturday morning for their second fixture of the season. The game kicked off and King Edwards were shocked to find themselves under pressure because of many errors due to the slippy surface. Never the less with five minutes gone the away side scored through Emilio Arciniega, who also added the extra two points. soon after some good hands from the backs put Dan Proctor in for a runaway try, again the extras were added by Emilio Arciniega. Connor Kelly and Matt Williams also added tries which were both converted. The score at half time was 28-0. King Edwards brought on a number of players and straight away took over the game. Connor Miles scored in the first few minutes of the second half, and other soon followed from Tom Higham and Kirren Blaymires. Tom Higham could of added two more if the ball was not so slippy and if he hadn't of forgotten were the try line was! He made up for this though by scoring another great try. Ralph Dowds finished off the game when he got a flat ball from the fly half and broke the gap to run away to score a converted try. An easy game for King Edwards who didn't play their best but did what they had to do. It sets them up for their game home against Giggleswhick next Saturday.

Although the result was disappointing the performance of the team, especially in the first half, showed great promise for the season. Against a big and well drilled side we competed and in large parts outplayed them. Defending superbly in the first half we kept our line intact turning over lots of their ball on the floor. Our defensive lineout work also competed well against their throw claiming some vital throws on our line. Our scrummaging started slowly but after the first few scrums we were certainly on the front foot.

In the three-quarters we scored two very well worked tries with some excellent handling, kicking and speed of thought. We also created a few more opportunities which with a little more patience, depth and straight running may have lead to further tries.

The conditions under foot with long grass and patches of cut and wet grass saw players slipping constantly and this certainly hampered us at times and we seemed to suffer later on when our supply of ball dried up.

At half time with the score at 12 – 0 to us and after surviving a final barrage in our 22 they looked a beaten side. Unfortunately we played without the ball for large parts of the second half and mistakes in our defence started to creep in. We conceded 4 tries 2 mainly due to poor tackling in their half, where as in the first half we had made our first time tackles in the second we often fell off them.

Ball we did win we didn’t use wisely, backs moves were very static and even when running from depth passes did not find their target. Our lineout looked weary as eventually did our scrummaging.

The reason for this turn around in fortune I do feel is down to lack of fitness, not just running around the pitch but also competitive practice. After coming back from tour on August 8th we have had nearly a month without any serious match practice, therefore our lack of endurance should really be expected. Because it was there a few weeks back then that should mean with hard work over the next 2 to 3 weeks we should be better prepared for a match of this type of intensity.

Looking at our first half display, we certainly matched them and outplayed them at times; this proves that we have the ability to compete against all of the sides we will play this season. Wilmslow are a large school who draft in players from Kings Macc and also Sale, therefore they are one of our toughest opponents. We should be disappointed with the loss but pleased with the potential that was shown. With a lot of hard work and effort we should win more matches than we lose this season, and who knows with a bit of luck and a fully fit squad this could be a very successful side.
