Fylde is delighted to announce that 20 year old backrow or lock Joe Robinson has agreed terms to move to the Woodlands for the 2013/14 season. The 6'5" forward was in the 6th Form at Sedbergh School, made his debut in senior rugby at his home town club Kendal in 2010 and then earned a two year contract at Newcastle Falcons.
The former Falcons Director of Rugby Alan Tait said “I first watched Joe playing for Sedbergh School against Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, and I really liked what I was seeing. The Scot believes that a back-row berth could be his eventual destination. “Joe has played in both the second and back rows, but I like the look of him as a No 8 or blindside flanker,” he said. A good lineout forward, it is Robinson’s determination and hard-working attitude that has impressed his coaches the most.
Robinson has an impeccable rugby CV with representative honours for various Cumbria age group teams before making the England U'16s and U'18s squads. John Fletcher, the England U'18s coach and another former Falcons director of rugby, has known Robinson since he was 12. “Joe’s personality is similar to his playing style, he just gets on with it,” said Fletcher. “He’s a hard worker and solid in the set-piece. He has all the attributes of a great forward.” Click here for a brief Sky TV interview with Joe filmed a year ago.
During last season Robinson played on a dual registration basis for Fylde's National One rivals Tynedale. Injury and a change of rugby management at the Falcons frustrated him and he's ready to make a new start at Fylde.
Joe Robinson said: " I'm looking forward to starting the new season and getting back into the action and really enjoying my rugby again! Fylde offers me a very positive and professional environment in which to progress and further my rugby career in the future. Hopefully I can return to the professional game in due course. Preseason games are approaching fast and offer me the chance to put my marker down as competition for back row places will be tough! Overall, I'm excited to get in the mix and have a successful season with Fylde."
Head Coach Mark Nelson said: "Joe is a quality player and primarily an out and out blindside flanker. We had to mix it up last season by playing opensides and no 8s in that position. Joe offers us something different."
