Wanderers' big game against old rivals
With Fylde's 1st team kicking its heels on Saturday due to the postponement of their critical game at Nuneaton, attention this week switches to Fylde Wanderers who will be playing their important Bateman BMW Premiership game against Preston Grasshoppers 2nds this Friday evening, 13th March, at the Woodlands (ko 19.45).
The Wanderers had a disappointing run of results before the Christmas break but despite numerous 1st team calls since then have stabilised the squad and have notched five wins in the last six games. They are currently in 4th place in the division, 'Hoppers in 5th, with the visitors having a game in hand. In fact, 'Hoppers have been in superb form of late and until last Saturday had put together a run of eight successive wins. On Saturday they lost narrowly, 19-24, to clear division leaders Sedgley Park.
This novel Friday evening kick-off time is to avoid the Fylde National School 7s Tournament on Saturday & Sunday, 14th & 15th March, at the Woodlands.
Manager Ian Cosh who, together with the highly experienced coach Graham Smith, looks after the squad said: "We have a great bunch of lads in the squad who are representing the Club with pride. There are some very able young players as well as a few older, more experienced campaigners, the kind of squad mix that you need to do well in a very competitive league. Wanderers players are getting their chances in the 1st team - for instance, Alistair Atkinson, Grant Ferguson, Mark Stephenson, Mark Edwards, Matt Hughes, Kieran Brookes & Mark Darlington have all stepped up and done well at a national league level. It's vital that able young players aspire to 1st team rugby yet are willing to serve their time developing their skills and experience at the Wanderers level."
