Wanderers' excellent win over champions Sedgley
Richard de Carpentier opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a trademark try combining pace and power to outstrip the defence to score in the corner. John Embelton converted from a difficult angle.
On 23 minutes Ben Hall, just returned from Chile, showed the Sedgley defence a clean pair of heels to extend the score. Embelton slotted over the onversion. On 39 minutes Embelton showed good composure and a keen awareness with a drop goal to extend the lead to 17 0.
Just before half time Reggie Whittam broke away from just inside his own half to outpace the defence to give Wanderers a 22-0 lead.
At half time Hall moved to 9, replacing Mark Norris who had played well on his senior league debut. Matt Gargett moved to 13 and David Read made his senior debut on the left wing.
On 47 minutes Embelton extended the lead when he showed strength in breaking through the defence to score under the posts. He followed this by coverting his try.
Shortly afterwards Matt Hughes who had looked dangerous all game showed great speed to finish wide on the right. Sedgley kept plugging away and looked certain to score when their fullback broke through. However Fylde's never say due attitude was epitomised by Hughes who chased down the attacker and knocked the ball out of the full backs hand just as he was about to score.
The final score of the day once again fell to Embelton who slotted over a penalty to give Fylde a 37-0 victory and a personal points tally of 17.
This was a great team victory, with all 18 players making excellent contributions. Man of the match was John Embelton.
