Fylde's senior teams go into the unknown ...
Fylde Wanderers start the new season with a very tricky journey to Kendal 2nds in the Bateman BMW Premiership. Mint Bridge is never an easy place to visit and the current appalling weather will mean a very sticky pitch. Kendal 2nds were champions of Division 1 last season and will be looking to make their mark against a fellow National League club. Last Saturday the Wanderers' young line-up performed heroically against a Fijian squad in the guise of the Army's 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. There were several very promising performances by players pushing for 1st team recognition.
They field a very strong and experienced pack and a very young back division. A surprising positional choice is Dave Rees at hooker - but the versatile former Army man shows again what a great club man he is by covering for absences.
15 David Winterflood; 14 Matt Hughes, 13 Tom Hart, 12 Rob Whittam, 11 Tom Sumner; 10 Jon Embelton, 9 Mark Norris; 1 Andrew Irving, 2 Dave Rees, 3 Mike Macareavey, 4 Ali Atkinson, 5 Greg Johnson, 6 Grant Ferguson, 7 Mark Stephenson, 8 Richard de Carpentier.
Replacements: Joe Brockbank, Alan Whittaker.
The rest of Fylde's senior teams face new and more difficult opposition this coming season following promotion at the end of the last campaign.
Fylde Saracens step up to Miller Homes Division Two and will be keen to see how they measure up following their amazing 2007/8 season during which they lost only one game. On Saturday they welcome Widnes 2nds to the Woodlands' top pitch (ko 15.00). Their opponents finished 9th in the division last season and just escaped relegation.
Fylde Vikings make their debut in Miller Homes 3 (North), the division won so clearly by the Saracens last season. They travel to local rivals Fleetwood 2nds who were relegated from Division 2 last season.
Fylde Vandals, somewhat reluctantly promoted to Miller Homes 4 (North) despite finishing just outside the two promotion places in 5 (North), welcome Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds to the Woodlands (ko 15.00).
